composers today include Phil Nyokai James, an American composer, Michel Van Der Aa, a Dutch composer, and Eugene Allen Kurtz, another American composer. Classical music, although very old, still has a major influence on musicians today and is still a valid and vital art form. Another famous and influential art form is Jazz music.
Jazz music was most popular from 1930 to 1942 during the swing era. At this time Jazz became very popular and people today are still influenced by it. The swing era included musicians in large band ensembles and had little to no improvising. One of the most popular performers at this time was Duke Ellington. The swing era was significant because unlike past forms of jazz that was orally passed down this was more written and had more structure. The three most played styles of this decade include traditional jazz styles like blues, swing, bebop, and hard bop as well as another form influenced by hard bop, called contemporary mainstream Jazz and lastly improvisers, which included all types of Jazz music. These forms are still similar to the most popular form of Jazz which was swing because swing is still one of the important styles along with other forms like bebop and contemporary mainstream Jazz. The period most nostalgic for Jazz fans would be swing and the blues based Jazz. This is because this is the time when Jazz was most famous and when it was Blues influenced it was very soulful and has a lot of meaning to the Jazz fans that still listen to
it. Rock music started in the late 1950s, however when it started only the young generation could be seen listening to it therefore it was not the point at which Rock and Roll was most popular. The most popular style of rock would be would be the psychedelic and acid rock music, which began in the 1960s and included many notorious artists from the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix. I would say that is on of the most popular Rock forms today along with Heavy Metal, Punk Rock, and Grunge Rock, which include musicians like Black Sabbath, Nirvana, and Queen. Future generations of students will look back on rock music of the 1960s, 1970s, and the 1990s where there were major changes to the popular forms of Rock. Rock and Roll is not music only for the youth but there are certain forms of Rock and Roll that are only enjoyed by those of the younger generation. Like in the 1950s when Rock first began the generation before them did not like Rock and thought that it was bad. And in the 1970s where punk rockers wanted to create their own sound that no one else seemed to like. Rock music is for everyone but each new that has been created seems to create the disapproval of the current parent generation. I believe that to have Rock as a valid and strong art form new forms need to be created to relate to the new generation of listeners. This is why the Rock artists in the 1980s saw problems when they tried to keep going through the 1990s but then saw a decline in popularity because the new generation was mostly uninterested.
