This story says how Rabbi Moshe Meisels had been sent by Rabbi Schneur Zalman to become a high ranking official in the French army to find out the military tactics they were going to use when invading Russia. Though it seems innocent, Rabbi Schneur Zalman wanted to use his student as a double agent to then have him tell the Russian Tsars their plan so they can stop Napoleon for invading Russia. This would mean that Napoleon wouldn’t have the chance to take the Jews with him to Europe and have them assimilate into the European society which was exactly what rabbi Schneur Zalman wanted. This is because, Rabbi Schneur Zalman believed that the Jewish religion, being the most important thing in life, was going to be taken away from them during the Haskalah. Prioritizing religion over anything else, Rabbi Schneur Zalman didn't want the most important thing in life to be taken away from the Jewish people if Napoleon would have came and invaded. That's because, one of the main things that happened during the Haskalah, was the loss of Jewish tradition, faith, and values. Jews used to pray and think that the most important thing was to never leave their tradition behind. However, during the Haskalah, the Europeans brainwashed the Jewish people and showed them that there are better things in life than religion and had most of the Jews become full bled Russians and even intermarry with non-Jews. Rabbi Schneur Zalman knew that he was doing the right thing, because in the end, he at least saved a couple Jews and let them die with dignity, than have them lose
