Comparison Essay
Continental philosophy emerged from the German Idealists (Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Freud, etc). Some other well known continental philosophers are Heidegger, Derrida, Foucault, Sartre, and Husserl.
Continental philosophers generally reject most science and scientific ways of doing anything (even science). They like to look at philosophy from historical approach, combining thoughts from all sorts of philosophers and looking at concepts like context, time, space, etc. They do not analyze philosophy in terms of looking at only one specific text, but instead look broadly at all texts. Continental philosophers also value human experience and human agency (action). Here is an Example: I am who I am because of the choices we made. I’m who I am because I go to college, I have a family and kids, I have a job…

In the original movie The Sandlot it introduces the lives of the kids and what they did on a regular day basis, it wasn’t all about baseball for them that added more to the storyline. Kids could relate more to this other than in Sandlot 2 because in this movie everything was about baseball. Also the movie went a little south for me when they talked more about science in The Sandlot 2 than baseball. In The Sandlot Smalls is taught how to play baseball and shown what to do when playing baseball. A different aspect that the Sandlot brought was the boys had fun childhood memories such as tree house sleepovers, lifeguard encounters, and baseball. The Sandlot 2 did not incorporate this into the movie by playing and having fun with your best friends, it felt more serious about other things detracting from the plot.…

Continental drift is when the Earth's plates move in different directions. Scientists think that Continental Drift is caused by the heating and cooling of the Earth's mantel which makes currents. These currents make the plates slide and move over the liquid and molten rock in the mantel. These currents made by the heating and cooling are called convection currents. The person who developed the theory of continental drift was named Abraham Ortelius in 1956. He thought of this theory by noticing that the land of South America seemed to fit Africa like a jigsaw puzzle. He then thought up that the land must've been torn apart by earthquakes and floods. Later on Alfred Wegener made a fully developed hypothesis on how the continents came to be where they are today. This was that the Earth's crust was once a supercontinent known as Pangeae. But the continents broke off not by earthquakes and flooding as Abraham Ortelius stated, but by volcanic activity due to thermal expansion. Then the new continents drifted by further expansion of the rip-zones. But then a theory without any expansion involved was developed by Frank Bursley Taylor. He proposed that the continents were dragged towards the equator by a lunar gravitational pull. But both of these theories were wrong, as I mentioned before, the continents move by convection currents in the mantel. This idea was founded by geologist Arthur Holmes. This is what continental drift is.…

Hobbs believed that humans are naturally cruel, selfish, and hungry for power; Hobbs argued that people need to be protected from themselves. Hobbs believed in an idea called the social contract. The next philosopher is John Locke he believed that all people we born with natural rights, including life, liberty, and property; Locke argued that kings could be overthrown if he takes away their rights. Baron de Montesquieu agreed with Locke and their for we got the separation of powers, which is dividing power among three branches of government. Voltaire, was one of the most famous writers of the Enlightenment, he argued for the rights of freedom of speech and religion. Voltaire once said “I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to death your right to say it.” He criticized intolerance, prejudice, and oppression. Another philosopher was Rousseau, he believed that people are naturally good, but power corrupts them; free people formed a social contract and government based on the common good, he supported a direct democracy. The last philosopher that I will include is Cesare Beccaria, he argued that people accused of crimes, punishment and torture should be abolished. Beccaria was upset with the use of torture, corrupt judges, secret trial, and secure punishments for crimes. He criticized abuses in the justice system. These men and their ideas influenced our government, for example their ideas were used in the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the…
