At the same time, Constantine was sent out east to serve as tribune under Diocletian, the current Emperor of Rome at the time. Under Diocletian’s rule, Christianity was severely persecuted to the point that it was illegal to be Christian. Barnes, the author of Constantine and Eusebius, says that in regards to Diocletian’s relationship with Christians that Diocletian sought to persecute Christians universally. He is noted as writing “These impious, Diocletian was informed by members of the court, could only refer to the Christians of the empire. At the behest of his court, Diocletian acceded to demands for universal persecution.” Even though his mother was secretly Christian, Constantine most likely grew up in a pagan-istic culture.
