Compare and Contrast Essay Sample
Purpose: The purpose of essay writing is to compare and contrast traditional and modern ways of how children spend their pastimes.
Audience: Audience is general. The essay will be informative and descriptive in essence. It will be interesting to read for teenagers, teachers, parents and other groups of society despite of their age and parental status.
Thesis statement: Today children tend to spend their pastime playing less active, more aggressive, and isolating games than ten years ago due to technological advances and availability of computers.
First point of comparison: Level of activity in games (physical movements, sports vs. sitting in front of the computer)
Second point of comparison: Level of aggressiveness in pastimes (team games vs. killing monsters on the screen)
Third point of comparison: Effect on development (physical and social development vs. isolation and obesity). As the society changes, the pastime choices of children tend to become different as well. The traditional games such as lotto are no longer of interest to technology-oriented children. Modern kids are fascinated with the computer games and television shows. While there is nothing wrong with technological advances as they reveal the progress made by humankind in science and artificial intelligence, the past time of modern children makes them socially isolated, aggressive and obese. Today children tend to spend their pastime playing less active, more aggressive, and isolating games than ten years ago due to technological advances and availability of computers. Games played by children only 20 years ago have been much more active. Today children spend more time sitting in front of the computer instead of going for a walk or playing active games with family or friends. The level of activity in games has much decreased. Even though schools motivate children to be active in sports, when kids come

We no longer live in a society where kids run around actively throughout the neighborhood. Late night soccer games, pick up games in the park, and innocence children are gone in sports. Today children are more interested in video game, computers and television, and parents are afraid of letting their children run around the streets because of kidnapping. The majority of kids are no longer interested in physical activity. Why do most kids enjoy video games rather than sports? Video games were first introduced in the 70’s and have been gaining popularity ever since. By the end of the decade video games had already become a preferred activity for kids. According to a recent study by Harris Interactive 1,178 children in the U.S, almost 9 percent of children gamers are pathologically or clinically “addicted to video games. However, 23 percent of youth say that they have felt "addicted to video games," with about one-third of males and a little more than one in 10 females reporting the sensation. This is wrong, kids should not be addicted to anything at their age. Kids need to stop playing so many video games and start to playing more sports.…

Physical inactivity is a serious health issue among children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends one hour of physical activity, daily, in order to stay healthy. While watching television is a favorite sedentary pastime and a popular choice of entertainment, the use of video games has been dominantly proliferate among children. Video gaming is often described as an unhealthy form of activity for children because it requires them to sit immobile in front of the television screen while engaging in these video games which condemns them to an unhealthy diet of inactivity. The time spent on video gaming has been steadily increasing. According to GRABstats.com, sixty-five percent of American households play computer or video games with twenty-five percent of those being children. Frequent use of video games has been linked to the increasing rates of child obesity as well as overweight children. Thirty-two percent of children are obese or overweight (Guy & et al. 2011). Since the growing rates of video game use and child obesity are directly proportional to each other, it has been suggested that high rates of video game use is a contributing factor in such a sedentary lifestyle. As these rates continue to rise, promoting physical activity is important. To promote physical activity, the gaming industry has simultaneously introduced a new form of video gaming called “exergaming”, which is the use of video games that provide physical exercise. The term “exergaming” derives from the words exercise and gaming (Exergamefitness.com). Exergames are interactive video games such as Wii Sports, Wii Fit for the Wii and Dance Central for the Xbox Kinect. These types of games require the player to get off their feet and virtually participate in the activity and therefore requiring a lot of movement. Exergaming promotes physical activity and as children love…
