A research was done in Singapore that showed that children were impulsive and unstable in controlling their emotions (Netzley 61). “They were also more likely to be socially incompetent” (Netzley 61). Children were to act more hostile due to their game addiction and were simply not as sociable. The children’s hostile acts are drawn from their addiction and the video games that they play. Their inquisitive minds are linked to the video games. A risk factor from the consistency of video games includes impulses (Gentile). Gamers have a sudden feeling to continue to play, not being able to restrain themselves (See Fig. 1). They act as if video games are the most important thing in the world and cannot get enough of it. “However, gaming can easily get out of hand, causing people to lose sleep, skip work, and otherwise shirk responsibilities when they cannot control their impulse to play games” (Netzley 59). Gamers tend to forget about their daily lives and shift their minds completely on video games. They act as if video games are the only things that are developed in this world, when they could be doing other things, such as going outside. Limitations are strongly needed to decrease these obsessive…
Linda Bernstein’s article “Gaming the Console” addresses the possible effects that video gaming has on teenagers and children. The article supports both sides of the debate: whether or not video gaming has negative consequences. Ultimately, Bernstein lets the reader form his or her own opinion on the subject. Some scientists and experts claim that video gaming is harmful as it may negatively affect areas of the brain, academic and social skills, and can become highly addictive. Other experts argue that some video games are educational and have positive physical benefits.…
I grew up in a household where video games were a privilege that I had to earn. When I had done all my homework and chores, I was allowed to play video games for an hour a day. As I grew older my parents thought I could make my own choices and did not limit the amount of time I spent playing video games. Many people today think that video games cause children to become couch potatoes, act dumb, and be rude. As a young child, my parents taught me that responsibilities come before the reward. That is why I have a different opinion of video games. I believe that video games can be beneficial to individuals; however, there are limitations. They help children deal with cancer, improve literacy skills, gain educational skills, and stay fit, but individuals should be cautious about the genre of the game and the amount of play time. When these precautions are taken, video games can be a helpful tool for many.…
“Currently there are more than half a billion people worldwide playing online games at least an hour a day -- and 183 million in the US alone.” (McGonigal, 2011) There is an extensive anti-game lobby that believes video games promote violence, anti-social behaviour, and zoned-out teenagers. However, there is ample evidence to support my theory that video games have been unfairly maligned. In this paper I will examine research and anecdotal evidence to illustrate why video games are good for you.…
Video gaming has taken the next generation by storm. Whenever a new gaming system is put on the market or new popular game comes out, the sales are through the roof. People who are playing these games are also spending more time than ever playing the games. Video gaming has become one of the more popular forms of media literacy in America especially in young children and teenagers. Is this good or bad? It is both, video games have both its positive effects and negative effects on children, but how it affects the brain and the way children interact with society is crucial to look at.…
When my 10-year-old son comes home from school, the first thing he does, is make a beeline for the computer, his tablet or video game console. He wants to play some type of video game. I frequently have to tell him to go get a book to read or go outside and play – which he does after some type of protest. Increasingly, we as parents are seeing this more and more, video game addiction. It is a problem that is prevalent throughout the United States. No longer do children want to take a ball and throw it or kick it around, or ride their bikes around…
The popularity of playing video games has been increasing in the lives of today’s forthcoming generation. In this essay, the author observes the claims that support video game effects, but also addresses the arguments criticizing video games. The author recognizes these attacks, but offers a new point of view towards the practice of video games during child development years. The author begins with a brief record of video game development in the past several decades and how these video games have become more complex, leading children who play them to develop a more complex mind, with elevated abilities. These benefits include: increased dexterity and cognitive ability, improvement in perception, reasoning, and learning skills, increased visual and attention capacity, encourages system thinking and motivation, a good source of social interaction, promotes pro-social behavior, and teaches children how to successfully work in a team setting. The opposing views are then presented, supporting data is provided, and the author addresses why these arguments should not be given a great deal of concern. The author recognizes that some of these concerns may be an issue, but easily avoidable with appropriate parental monitoring. The author closes with indentifying that parents should not solely depend on video games for children development and that other modes of entertainment are equally imperative. The author expresses the importance of incorporating video game play in a child’s development, but stresses the significance of parental surveillance in order to promote these benefits.…
Video games have become a major aspect of our society. Kids play it almost every day, even adults get into it. There are many different game types you can choose from such as action, adventure, sports, Disney, and many more. The two that I want to focus on though is sports and action games. Both of them have their own style; action deals with explosions and gunfire usually just a lot of things happening while sports deals with events such as football or golf etc.…
Most people think that playing video games will lead you to a life of crime, delinquency, and misery. The opposite, however, is true. Video games can be used properly to improve the coordination and concentration physically, socially, and mentally to benefit the user. Does this mean kids should spend all day playing? No. This occurs when they are used properly and in moderation. Contrary to what most of the people believes, video games can actually help your motorskills no matter how younger people are.…
Children are encouraged to spend at least 60 minutes out of a 24 hour day outside and video gaming is an addiction. One might say it's not until a parent sees that a child would rather sit inside and play video games all day than go outside and be active. The passage "Video Games Put Youths At Risk" states, "Researchers say that the risk of unhealthy weight gain increases with every hour a child spends playing video games." Therefore, obesity and health problems are more likely to occur. This takes away from a child's physical ability by not playing outdoors, and giving them a nasty habit and calling it a "stress reliever".…
Providing safe, compassionate, competent, and ethical care is one of the important principles outlined in the Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses, written by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). This principle requires nurses to create a therapeutic and trustworthy relationship with their patient while also remaining aware that they are providing the utmost safe and ethical care (CNA, 2017). By following the guidelines in the Code of Ethics, nurses are more likely to provide better care and decrease the chance of potential errors. In current times, many nurses face issues that inhibit them from providing the best care to their patients. Examples of such hindering factors are long hours, time constraints, staff shortages, and high work demands…
According to John DiConsiglio between 70% and 90% of teens in the United States play video games and it is said that 5% to 10% of those kids are addicted to gaming, but what about the other 80%? Although people may argue that the internet or video games cause adolescents to have antisocial personalities that isn’t necessarily true for every person. The internet and videogames can have positive impacts on both the world and people’s lives. The internet and both online and video games aren’t detrimental to adolescents’ intellectual and social development because they can be used for educational tools and they allow teens to become more involved in the world around them.…
Sitting on the couch or going on the computer and playing a video game is much easier than getting up to go outside. It also brings just as much fun for kids, but in a different way. More and more children have their own gaming system and are spending more time inside playing video games. The reason is because it is much cheaper for parents to buy video games for their kids to make them happy than go on a road trip or to fly out somewhere. Also this will bring multiple periods of entertainment for children and parents will get their money’s worth out of it. Now the question is, should parents encourage their kids to play video games? There are many different ways people can answer this because some may agree and say that it is cheap, inexpensive entertainment that will keep kids occupied when needed. On the other hand people may be against encouraging kids to play video games because it would hinder the kids going outside and being active. Ultimately, video games are a positive influence on children; therefore, parents must encourage their children to play video games. Specifically, video games will improve hand-eye coordination in children. In addition, many video games developers offer a variety of educational games for children. Furthermore, many video games offer children the ability to actively engage themselves during gameplay. Instead of lifelessly holding a controller, these children are mainly dancing, jumping, or running during gameplay.…
Over the years video games have gotten a bad reputation. They are considered to be intellectually lazy, violent and a complete waste of time. People also tend to think that people that play video games are more likely to be lonely with few friends and almost no social skills. And with the increasing amount of video games that are being developed faster in Generation Z parents are starting to worry about their children. However, multiple researches have proven all those things to be false. Playing video games can actually help strengthen an individual’s social, cognitive and motor skills. With their multiplayer feature, fast decision making and need for an accurate hand-eye coordination, video games have been helping children and teenagers to…
Video games on any console, whether it is PS3, XBOX, or on a PC, are very popular in today's world. The genre that is obviously the most popular in games is about war. Now many people (especially moms) badger, and constantly criticize these games, saying that they are ruining their kids’ lives and may even be leading them to become killers. Which is the most common reason of hatred; if you know what to look for, games can be a powerful tool to teach kids certain life skills. We hear about the negative effects games have on children but what about the positive effects?…
