The standards addressed in Goal 5 are 5.1, 5.2, 5.5, 5.7, and 5.8. Standard 5.1 demonstrates developing the knowledge and skills relating to planning and implementing activities that utilize students’ prior knowledge and encourage active learning. Standard 5.2 involves writing detailed lesson plans that include all important components for direct instruction, inquiry, and cooperative learning. Standard 5.5 demonstrates developing knowledge and skills in relation to giving students verbal and written feedback. These lesson plans incorporated activating students’ prior knowledge as well as linking new ideas to familiar ones. One lesson I taught was on following directions, which students were able to make connections to their everyday experiences. The direct instruction lesson plans that I created and taught, included lesson objectives, checking for understanding, guided practice, independent practice, and reteaching. The indirect lesson plans I created and taught also included activating students’ prior knowledge, checking for understanding, and reteaching, but also included development of learning task, clarification of task, scaffolding student learning, and closure. The indirect lesson plan that I taught for a second grade class, utilized cooperative learning groups. In regards to standard 5.5, the indirect lesson that I taught, included a rubric that each group filled out as a team after the lesson, which allowed for immediate feedback.
