Obesity in America is an ever-growing problem. Despite years of trying to eradicate obesity, it continues to grow. From governmental intervention to simple magazine articles, every step of action has been taken. Amidst the plethora of passages about this touchy subject there are two that stick out. The first is, “Don’t Blame the Eater,” an article written by David Zinczenko. The picture that Zinczenko paints is one that puts the fault of obesity on the fast food industry. Because he was once an overweight child, he sympathizes with the eater. In the second writing on this subject, “What You Eat is Your Business,” Radley Balko, takes a different standpoint on the matter. Balko believes that it is nobody’s business but your own when it comes to what you eat. He absolutely focuses on the problem of obesity, but he puts the blame on the government and the eater. In “The Coking Animal”, the author, Michael Pollan, gives his opinion and observations on the American food system. Pollan links the facts that since we look for the most convenient and least time-consuming way to get food, we often intake more calories, sugar, fat, and salts, which are substances our bodies are automatically bound to like. After examining my own eating habits, I realized that these conclusions made by the author are merely accurate. When I am crunched for time, what do I usually decide to eat? The answer is simple: something fast, cheap, and appetizing. If you think about it, what is fast, cheap, and appetizing is normally not healthy, but on the contrary, food that is time-consuming to make, more expensive than fast food, and only sometimes enticing, is the type of nutrition that we, as humans need. Another point that is closely related with the food we eat is the people we eat it with. Looking at myself, I normally have meals with people. In order to improve my current diet, I need to reduce my caloric intake to the 1500-calorie diet recommended on USDA’s SuperTracker. The most efficient way to do this is to eat healthier meals at home rather than unhealthy, easy to procure fast food. In addition, I exceed my sodium intake with 2,016 mg on average, 516 mg over the recommended amount. Due to harmful effects of high sodium intakes on blood pressure, a prominent risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney diseases, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine established the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for Sodium at 2,300 mg. This indicates that I must lower my sodium intake as a precautionary measure (Higdon, Sodium (Chloride), 2001). Again, as mentioned above, the most proficient way to do this is by eliminating fast food out of my diet along with analyzing nutrition labels for high sodium content.…
