Respect is a very valuable thing; especially in cultures such as the Chinese. It is one of the aspects in life that must be earned, not taken for granite. Respect is also very difficult to obtain, yet it is so common that nine year old chess prodigies can harness it. One does not have to be as brave a knight or as powerful as a king in order to gain respect, but the use of “invisible strength,” according to Amy Tan’s, “Rules of the Game,” is the power needed to access respect. Waverly, the protagonist in “Rules of the Game,” uses invisible strength to gain respect from others by listening to the teachings of her mother, being knowledgeable about the thing that interests her, and learning to be gracious in losing as well as in winning.…

In this paper, I will be exploring the depths of the book titled “Values of the Game by Bill Bradley”. Values of the Game is a book about basketball and an athletes performance, but also is geared to males and females. When it comes to age specifics, the targeted age of this book varies because students of any age can relate from the information this book has to offer. With this particular book, Bill Bradley’s objective was to express the important qualities athletes have that helps them become successful basketball players/an overall team and their way of applying these specific qualities to their everyday life. Based on the player’s judgment on the court, Bradley was able to us this as a comparison to everyday life. Quoted by Bradley,…

Basketball isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. It requires you to push yourself again and again and not give up until the final buzzer sounds. Basketball requires a lot of teamwork and that team is like your family. Working together like a family helps push every player to do their best and make each other proud. In the poem “Slam Dunk & Hook” the author Yusef Komunyakaa uses metaphors, allusions, and imagery to illustrate basketball which offers escape and triumph for the players.…

I believe Margaret Drabble’s statement, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for objective facts,” to be quite true. Throughout history, people of all ages have wanted to be accepted and belong to a group rather than look at the facts and measure what is true and false. It is very evident in our society today that not only do we want to be accepted and belong, but we also are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter what the consequences turn out to be. I agree with Drabble’s statement and believe that it is true all around the world. If you were to step outside our society and look back at it objectively, I can assure you that you would see evidence of this.…
The week before his big showcase, Gavin was at the park working hard to fine tune his game. He’d been dreaming about this moment for years, the day when he was leaving to play in the NBA’s annual rookie showcase game in New York. This park had become his home away from home, the clean air, without all the New York pollution bringing peace to his calculating mind. He loved the smell of the trees which reminded him of the pine smell of the forest near his house in New Jersey where he took long walks when he was feeling stressed out. The jangling of the ball swishing through the chain net was his favorite sound in the whole world. The thudding of the ball whenever he dribbled reminded him of the way his older brother used to thunder down the stairs before he left to join the army.…
The scent of popcorn wafts over the peeling red walls of the ancient gym. Fluorescent lights blind me as I turn to glance over at the creaky old bleachers. The shuffles and murmurs of parents fill the sticky air while they come in. Clad in itchy mesh jerseys that boasted a large spur on the front hung over the equally uncomfortable shorts that resembled the jet black of my jersey, I block out the cheers of the crowd while attempting to perfect my form. Swish! The basketball floats through the air, gliding perfectly, hurdling through the air into the net. The referee blows the whistle. It’s time.…
Critical thinking is an ability that is possessed by human beings that enables us to reflect on, rationalize and dissect information. It empowers and equips us with the capabilities necessary to solve problems, function logically and plan effectively for future endeavors. Our ability to think is one of the most important processes afforded to human beings. It is the foundation of everything. All that is created was birth from a thought. Critical thinking is influenced by memory in that our brain is like a database that stores past information which determines how we deal with current situations.…
Volleyball, a game of strategy and technique helped develop who I am today. Throughout my life, I have been on many sports teams; however, volleyball is the sport that has allowed me to grow the most as a person. It has made me into the strong, determined and trustworthy leader I am today. Along with improvements in these personal qualities, I have also enhanced my volleyball skills. Recognition for this improvement was given when I received an award for the most improved player. Due to my dedication to this sport, I was also recognized as the most valuable player on the team. These acknowledgments allowed me to gain motivation to become a better player. I wanted to be the best and I refused to settle for anything less. Over the years, my team and I became well coordinated and worked together to strive to achieve a common goal, winning. In 2010, we made it to the finals. Through hard struggle and dedication we placed third out of the eight teams that were present. This was the first year we made it to finals and received placement. Volleyball has allowed me to gain confidence and because of this sport, I have realized I am able to succeed in anything I set my mind to. The qualities I have developed through playing volleyball have enabled me to become a better person. As a strong, confident, and determined woman with her eyes set on success, I am eager to overcome adversity and excel in future…
In this essay the writer will describe an incident they witnessed whilst on Placement 1A; and in so doing, they will reflect on that incident and link it to an aspect of professional pratice in nursing. The writer will use Gibbs’ reflective cycle (1988). Arguing on the basis of Gibbs’ theory, Somerville and Keeling (2004:1) propose that Gibbs’ framework is merited for ‘examining personal thoughts and actions’ in a clinical setting. Various research studies also make a reference to Gibbs’ framework and it is widely suggested that reflection plays an important role in professinal practice.…
Whirling, he sped towards the hoop, his muscled arms ready to shoot. Abruptly, the shrill shriek of the whistle split the air, halting him in mid-jump. The team leader, Pack, shouted, his normally pale face ruddy, “Jason, you are the power forward, you shouldn’t catch the ball now!” Jason made a derisive noise, scorning what Pack said. He pounded the ball against the ground, and suddenly, he lobbed the ball viciously towards Pack, putting almost all of his brute strength behind that pass. The ball connected with Pack's face, whose skin split open like a ripe berry.…
