Concourse Dental Reflection
Concourse Dental is a small private dental office where both the dentist and the dental hygienist work closely with the patient to practice preventive dentistry through patient education. I observed how if the patient is diagnosed with a oral health disorder, the dentist and dental hygienist would talk with the patient after receiving treatment. This opportunity taught me that one on one counseling with the patient can change the patient's lifestyle that contributed to the oral health disorder. Ultimately, this dental office imparted me the importance of delivering dental education to

At MEND Poverty Clinic, I was surprised by how many patients do not realize that their bad habits can cause a permanent condition like periodontal disease. Lack of awareness of oral health has affected the health of my people in this community. After treating many unfortunate patients, such as a seventeen-year-old patient that needed extractions and only had few teeth left, an implant program was implemented which I am in charge with Dr. Robert Hale in order to improve the life of many…

The Nashville Veterans Affairs (VA) dental clinic was a beneficial learning experience because it was a unique population. The VA is committed to improving the health of Veterans through a comprehensive and high quality system, which focuses on each patient's special needs. This mission was important because each patient I saw was completely different with special needs, but they were all similar in a few behavioral ways. My rotation at the VA clinic was helpful because each patient I saw had different medical conditions. It was interesting to learn that all of the VA records were accessible to all of a patient’s providers in the hospital. This seemed important and helpful in my opinion because everything about that patient’s medical treatments…

Dentists and dental hygienists need to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and confident in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The treatment of this infectious disease needs to be performed in a way that minimizes risks to other patients and health care professionals. Previous studies have shown an unwillingness of health care professionals in treating such individuals. This study examined the effectiveness of a training program for dental and dental hygiene students at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD) in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this program is to give students knowledge in treating HIV patients, to reduce the risk of transmission of this infectious disease to dental staff and others, and to reduce the stigma associated with treating these patients. This particular study addressed students’ comfort level in treating HIV/AIDS patients in three categories: homosexual/bisexual individuals, intravenous drug users, and individuals who have had blood…

SDAB represents the UMD Chapter for the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation’s (NCOHF) Students United for America’s Toothfairy program. Through this organization, I visit elementary and middle schools in the College Park and Washington D.C. area and teach young children the proper way to brush their teeth and how important oral hygiene is to their health. Just recently, I organized a drive to collect dental supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of PG County as part of the NCOHF’s Smile Drive campaign. As a leader of this organization, I’ve served as a mentor to other pre-dental students and created innovative projects and initiatives to foster participation in activities. Just this year alone, my co-president and I increased the member count from 15 to over…

“The Glass Castle” by Jeanette Walls is an extremely intriguing novel that really kept my attention throughout the whole story. The Walls family is definitely one that is unlike any I’ve ever come across, and the lessons that the children learned were ones that helped shaped their lives and made them who they are today. Jeanette obviously learned so much from her experience that she wrote a whole book about it, managing to hold the reader’s attention through all 281 pages. Jeanette Walls goes through many descriptions of situations that she faced that people normally should not face. For most of her childhood, she was traveling from place to place because her parents always thought that they would hit it big and never finding a steady job.…

The book showed what's it’s like to overcome adversity at anytime even when times are bad Jeannette Walls overcame her father's alcoholism and her mother's psychoness. The family was also going through a financial crisis so with the weight of everything on her she had to get over so much for her to be able to succeed in her later life. Jeanette was a very strong and determined person and she didn’t allow herself to use the homelessness or her father’s alcohol problems but more as opportunities.
