(Article 3) This means that a person can have the effects of a concussion for a pro-longed time without evening knowing about it. The effects of a concussion can range from behavioral differences to cognitive difficulties. (Article 2)
Also the risk of permanent brain damage increases for high school students and girls. Concussions are more frequent in younger athletes than in older ones. (Article 1) High school athletes are more prone to symptoms of depression, dizziness, and irritability and these symptoms can last for up to six weeks. (Article 1)
With girls there is also an increased in risk with brain damage from a concussion.
This is due to females having smaller, and weaker necks than boys. (Article 4) Women are also more prone to longer-lasting effects than men, which can led to trouble later in life.
On the other hand, there are rules in place that help deal with concussions. As well as protective gear that helps prevent concussions. The head gear is lined with vinyl that absorbs multiple shocks to the head, however these head gears are only used in football, and hockey. (Article 1) The rules also in place say that a health care provider has to allow a player to return if they suffer a concussion, but a health care provider can miss a certain point in their diagnosis.
In conclusion an athlete should be required to sit out for longer periods of time, because it can lead to permanent brain damage and have longer lasting effects on the player themselves. Athletes who suffer from a concussion, will have long term effects like depression, and loss of cognitive functions permanently. This will also effect them in the long run, and will cause them to be troubled later in
life.
