This essay will go over tone and conflict in To Kill a Mockingbird. I am doing the scene where Jem stands up to his dad, Atticus. This is apart of coming of age because it’s about how Jem finally stood up to his dad and he told his dad something other than just listening to him. This took place in chapter 15 and the very ending when Boo Radley comes out. I will give some examples from the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I will get the examples from the book and the movie. This chapter is about how Atticus had a case with a African american. This made it a difficult case because the whites always win. A little after that the kids got into it and tried to save Atticus from getting hurt. And that’s when Atticus told Jem to go home but in the movie Jem says “No, sir” and in the book he shook his head and said “I ain’t going”. So at that point Jem finally did the right thing other than follow Atticus’s orders. That is a coming of age because Jem finally realized that if he always follow Atticus’s words then one day something like this will happen when there is a bunch of people around of his dad and if he left Atticus could of came home hurt. Also Jem uses a lot of tone when he told Atticus no in the movie. Another example is, when Scout is in the middle of everyone at the Maycomb County Jail. Scout started to talk to Mr. Cunningham about how his son is a very good kid and she just starts to touch Mr. Cunningham feelings. This is coming of age because Scout finally uses her brain for something. She didn’t just come out and say it. And her tone made him feel like he should back off because he is hurting someone and it’s like he is hurting his son. So Mr. Cunningham backed off and all his men and he left and no one was
