The psychological concept of conformity refers to a shift in thought or character due to external influence - real or imagined. More often than not, people find themselves believing that since more people are doing some things, then they also should. This may not necessarily be good, but a lot of times, we find it hard to resist flowing with the crowd. In other instances, our peers contribute to the external in what is considered peer pressure. Several groups of people become victims of this kind of pressure on a regular basis. Songs are good examples of medium through which peer pressure is exemplified. Since time immemorial, songs have always carried the message of conforming to current fashion and trends.

Katy Perry’s song Last Friday Night depicts the scene of a party she hosted and was attended by friends on a Friday night. In certain neighborhoods, house parties where alcohol flows freely are held frequently. The hosts always try as much as they can to outdo the previous hosts in terms of quality of entertainment offered. The clip shows several instances where the patrons at the party try to hook up with partners who seem to be the envy of most youth. The other patrons seem to be struggling to fit into the bracket. Katy herself is the victim of such a struggle – she wants to identify with the crowd that appears to be “with it”. In so doing, she is trying to conform to what her peers think is cool.

Therefore, it is sufficient to say that the song depicts the psychological concept of conformity. As the clip ends, Katy’s parents arrive home from an event claiming that they had been tipped by her uncle of an ongoing party at the house. In the conversation that ensues, she asks her parents about their partying ways in their youth. Apparently, her uncle had alluded to it during the party. They affirm and even go ahead to

This and the use of incorrect grammer, so common to rebellious teenagers, helps portray the message of the song, which is that today’s youth are prisoners of the older generations society, which alienate the younger generation and instead of looking for support and comfort, they thrive to rebel against these rules and law enforcement bodies, with the institution of society having no effect on the younger generation as they don’t comply and don’t want to reform. This creates the younger generations culture, arguing they are their own society.…

The songs begins with, “Well, I wish I had some shoes on my two bare feet / And it's gettin' kinda cold in these painted on cut-off jeans / I hate the way this bikini top chafes / Do I really have to wear it all day?” bringing to light the accepted image of country women and deeming it unfair, for gender inequality has created an expectancy that is unreasonable. Next, they address the “cat-calling” and pet names used to refer to females in country songs by singing, “Cause I got a name / And to you it ain't “pretty little thing”, “honey” or “baby.” These two lines protest the downgrading langue of popular country music and demand that females be treated as equals. They then augment these ideals in the chorus of their song and eventually reach the bridge, where they reference past country music by saying, “We used to get a little respect / Now we're lucky if we even get / To climb up in your truck, keep our mouth shut and ride along / Conway and George Strait / Never did it this way / Back in the old days / Aww y'all, we ain't a cliché / That ain't no way / To treat a lady” ("Maddie & Tae Lyrics"). With this bridge, Maddie and Tae make it apparent that women, including themselves, are not content with simply being the girl in a country song. The audaciousness of this duet is commendable, for they produced a very powerful and trendy protest song; however, the effectives is even more…

To be born a unique being, one with the freedom of will, one with the ability to form independent beliefs and mindsets- to be human. The most honored of all creation, yet the most rebellious. As human life is deprecated in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, the human life is equated to nothing more than the dirt from which it came. Huxley parallels himself, an aristocratic pedigree, to the upper class inhabitants of the brave new world that sought the meaning of human life above the accepted pretense of society. Aldous Huxley depicts the social isolation of the upper class through over-intellectual characters that see beyond the superficiality of society, thus magnifying the importance of remaining true to oneself in the midst of conformity.…

People believe if everybody was equal, the world would be a happier place. In reality that is far from true because it can create many problems that are not visible at first. It has been thought that if there was no rich or poor and everybody was the same, war would not exist and people would be better-off. There have also been many arguments as to why people need to be different and the need for social classes is essential. Conformity and individuality are very important in society. Aldous Huxley uses the lack of uniqueness, the dangers in group decisions, and the lack of innovative ideas to display how conformity is a major threat to society.…

Social conformity can destroy your health in many ways. It can suppress the immune system and cause stress, lead to depression, cause emotional deprivation, prevent you from making healthy decisions, and lead to you doing thoughtless, dangerous acts. Although there are only five here, there are more physical and emotional consequences of conforming to group expectations due to fear and disapproval. Conforming to a group that’s against or unsure of your beliefs and values you believe in just because you want to fit in automatically creates anxiety because you are trying to be and think like someone you are not. Social conformity also increases your chance of not making healthy decisions. Like when you are at a party and there’s alcohol. You…

“We are half ruined by conformity, but we should be wholly ruined without it.” - Charles Dudley Warner. We have created this boundary between conformity and individualism and often times these traits get abused, thus creating someone who is too individualistic or a society that is too conformed. Individuality and conformity are both essential parts of society however, if one is held above the other in the wrong manner we could be dealing with people lashing out in inhumane ways or people not being able to think for themselves. In order to have a functioning society we need to find the perfect balance between conforming with your peers and having individual thoughts and actions.…

I think you could find a case for a lot of these examinations could relate to these songs, but the one that really stood out to be was the “sexual double standard,” along with “sexual objectification.” The reason for believing this, is because in the song “Dear Future Husband,” Megan Trainor says “Dear future husband, If you wanna get that special lovin’ Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night.” basically saying the only way you’re going to be able to get anything, is if you do that. She is making herself into a sexual object towards her future husband and selling off what he likes, to get what she wants. I personally think reinforce norms within our society. By doing this, she is just doing what culture seems to be “okay with” by not “selling…

Losing one’s individuality is most common to individuals who are exposed and influenced by others throughout life. The idea from “The Sociology of Leopard Man” by Logan Feyes discusses how indi viduals are confronted with conformity in order to fit in with society. Conforming is one obstacle that many people face through life. When a person conforms it means that they undergo a change in order to fit in with society. Unlike conformists, non-conformists are the “unusual” part of the world that do not undergo a change within themselves to fit in with the world. These people are often looked down upon and ridiculed by their personal lifestyles. While some people decide not to give in to their personality, I believe that the idea from leopard, the influence of families, and the atmosphere of schools will dictate one’s decision whether to conform or not.…

Humans are often hindered by society's expectations to the point where reaching our creative potential is nearly impossible. Conforming to society does not prove anything about character, and in Emersons words “Your conformity explains nothing. Act singly, and what you have already done singly will justify you now” (Emerson). Conforming to a group leaves people mimicking one another. Acting singly will take a person farther in society than just going along with the crowd. When big figures are present a person's inner voice stops contributing because others are doing the talking. Questioning the influential and powerful people may cause a disturbance in the status quo, but elevating ones voice to a higher level stands out and is necessary…

Everyone conforms in society at some point. John F. Kennedy claimed, “Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” When it comes to the topic of conformity, most of us will readily agree that individuality changes the world. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of is conformity that bad? While some are convinced that conformity is great for the world, others believe that conformity is the death of us. I tend to fall on the side where conformity is the death of us, because without individuality we would not have a great deal of the advances in technology.…

    1) Do you think conformity with norms in general is a good or bad thing? Why? Conformity can come in useful when we are in unfamiliar surroundings or activities. I would say it can be good and bad, if there is a social norm that is meant to keep order and peace, then conforming to this standard can be considered good.…
