Conformity: Why People Behave A Certain Way

Over the course of my social psychology class, we’ve talked about many different topics that explain why people behave a certain way. One of my favorite topics we discussed was conformity. Conformity is defined as a change in one person’s behavior to be similar to the behavior of the people around him or her. Conformity occurs because of our need to know what is right and our desire to be accepted by the people around us.
In our culture, conformity is often viewed as a negative thing. However, conformity can be beneficial in a variety of situations. For example, conformity is beneficial in confusing situations where a person doesn’t know what to do. By conforming to the people around them, an individual can figure out what acceptable/normal
