Conserve Water Resources In California
Californians should conserve the water resources in order to lower the excessive use of water. The state’s water resources are receding rapidly as it has recently experienced very dry years, such as 2014 which was the third driest year on record. According to the California Department of Water Resources, “[a drought] can best be thought of as a condition of water shortage for a particular user in a location.” California has been experiencing water shortages for quite some time now. State Governor, Jerry Brown, declared a drought state of emergency on January 17, 2014 (California Drought). Since that time, the situation has only become worse as nobody is making a change to help the cause. I believe that we have to save the water now for the …show more content…
It would be a shame to restrict the water for our farmers where we get our local foods. Not only would we have to turn to water from outside sources but we would also have to rely on food from other states and countries. There are many ways to save water that everybody should be aware of because we waste water in our everyday lives. Most people have heard about the simple ways to help like turning off the sink while brushing their teeth or when they put shampoo on in the shower, but doing only the simple ones will not save our water. We must limit our time and the amount we use when we shower, wash our hands or the dishes, or when we water our plants. Also, collected rain from when there is a storm can be a great substitute for watering plants instead of using a hose. There are all kinds of methods to preserve and make great use of the much needed …show more content…
Some might not be worried because the Earth is made up of mostly water, why are we so worried about running out? Yes, it is true that the Earth is mostly water; 97% of it is salt water and 2% is frozen, but 1% is only fresh water available to drink. It would not be very pleasant to consume sea water nor is it good for you. Desalination, the process of converting seawater or wastewater so that it is consumable, is very costly and the most expensive water supply alternatives in California. Even if that water resource is their right next to us at our disposal, it is expensive to process the water and many taxpayers would frown upon the raise of taxes. By cause of the current drought situation, drastic measures are being considered as now officials are inching towards the production of desalination projects. Until they have made their decisions, we must focus on preserving our resources that we have

To this day, California has been in a drought. The governor, Jerry Brown is struggling to create policies to prevent people from using large amounts of water. He has made proposals to reduce the water use in California by building tunnels under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to increase the supply of water. One of the reasons California is in a drought is because of our history of dealing with the gold miners using hydraulic mining to mine gold, and damming the Tuolumne River to provide water for San Francisco. Although the use of of water has benefitted farmers and cities, it has not been in the best interest of the state because it has harmed the Native Americans and the environment.…

In the worst of times California’s climate is destructive to the well being of not only Californian’s quality of life, but the surrounding ecosystems. With unseasonably high temperatures presenting issues farther into the future, in “Adapting California's water management to climate change”, the authors Ellen Hanak and Jay Lund provide an overview of the effects California’s climate has during times of drought, and the complications it presents for the State's water management. Water management in the state oversees a plethora of concerns; properly planning, supply and delivery of water, quality assurance, addressing floods, the corresponding risks it presents, and the use of water as an energy source through hydropower. Larger governmental powers, like the State and Federal organizations, both have control over the above stated aspects of water management when dealing with California’s climate. The smaller, local, governmental bodies uphold the day to day operations of those systems. Best described by Hanak and Lund as “institutional diversity”, citing that the widespread sharing of responsibilities offers greater flexibility in response to unforeseen challenges each face, relying on the innovation of processes towards a wetter tomorrow. From the perspective of those in charge of the water management in the state,…

Although it has been found that humans had very little to do with the start of the drought, California citizens can affect the duration of it. Ultimately, the only thing that will truly end the drought is drastically increased rainfall. One foot of rainfall would be needed a month to put an end to the effects of the drought. However, there are ways presently available that can help conserve water. This should be a prime focus, as it is the best hope of preventing further damage to our ecosystem. While California cannot…

Southern California imports about 85% of its water, most of it coming from the Colorado River. Because we import so much water, we are becoming too dependant on outside water sources, which needs to change if we ever want the drought to end. California has started pumping more groundwater in response to this threat, but over-pumping groundwater is not the solution either. In order to eliminate the importing of water, we need to turn to desalination, recycled water, and rainwater harvesting.…

Two years ago, when I was in high school, our social science teacher told us there had a serious drought in Southern California. Most of us did not know anything about it and we felt so surprised about this new. Today, when I heard this new again, I can’t believe that the drought still exist in Southern California, I thought it already solved by the government because it had been two years when I heard this new. From most of my research, it said that it had been fourth year for California to have the drought. Water supply is no longer enough in California, our government was trying to think a best useful way to solve this problem. Some people think that desalination is a good solution because it cost less money and can also recycle the energy.…
