93 was hijacked about 40 minutes after the departure. Passengers on board learned of the other attacks due to the delay, and quickly took action. The flight attendant and some of the passengers took over the cockpit from the hijackers, but the plane flipped and spiraled towards the ground at about an estimated speed of 500 MPH. Nobody survived, and due to the explosion, people say that most parts of the plane disintegrated. It should be noted that WTC Building 7 also fell on 9/11, it was located one block from the towers. Wasn’t hit by planes, but collapsed at 5:20 that evening. The World Trade Center is widely considered to be symbols of America’s power and influence. When we were attacked, the attackers knew that this was one of the things we loved, so that’s why they went for it.
Over 3,000 people died due to the attacks in NYC and in Washington D.C. This includes over 400 police officers and firefighters. Especially for firefighters, it was the deadliest day for the New York fire fighters, 343 were killed just during that day. Although, while the search continued for bodies in the debris, a glimmer of hope appeared. There were beliefs that the basement of the World Trade Center may contain pockets of air, and possibly survivors.
At 9 PM, Bush delivered a message from the Oval Office, stating “Terrorists attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they can not touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they can not dent the steel of the American Resolve”. Bush also stated that the United States would track down and punish those responsible for the “evil, despicable, acts of terror”, whom took thousands of American lives. There was a lot of aftermath effects on our country. The Twin Towers were at the heart of NY’s financial district. Afraid of stock market panic, we shut down the stock market for four days. These attacks plunged us into a horrid war against Afghanistan. The total cost of damage against the attacks was $60 Billion. People made millions on the stocks of American and United Airlines and those of other corporations that were likewise impacted by the September 11 attacks.
There were many conspiracy theories about the attacks, such as “Why did the world’s most powerful air force fail to intercept the planes?” Conspiracy theorists say that Vice President Pick Cheney told the air force to stand down.
Another one is “Why did the twin towers collapse so quickly, within their own footprint, after fires on a few floors that lasted only an hour or two?” Conspiracy theorists say the twin towers were destroyed by controlled demolitions. Also, conspiracy theorists also ask the question “How could an amateur pilot fly a commercial plane in a complicated maneuver into the headquarters of the world’s most powerful military (referring to the military), 78 minutes after the 1st report of a possible hijack, and leave no trace behind?” At first the conspiracy theorists thought that it was a missile that went into the pentagon rather than a plane, now they think that the Pentagon conducted the attack themselves to create some type of distraction. Another interesting theory, asks the question “Why was the crash site at Shanksville PA, so small and why was the aircraft debris not visible?” This is a question that is asked by more than just conspiracy theorists, it’s wondered by Americans all around. Theorists say that it was shot down by a missile, disintegrated in mid-air, and spread the debris over a larger area than we originally thought. Finally, another theory that is commonly asked is “How could a skyscraper which wasn’t hit by a plane, collapse so quickly and symmetrically, when no other steel framed skyscraper has collapsed because of fire?” Theorists say that the WTC building was destroyed by a controlled demolition using explosives and incendiaries. These conspiracy theories may or may not be true, but are commonly asked among our
citizens. The September 11 attacks had some immediate effects on the United States, and some long lasting ones as well. Some of these effects are still taking place today. O ne of the effects of the attacks is that we’ve deployed many troops into Afghanistan and this war is still ongoing. There was also a major impact on the system of using airplane travel. Used to, we would have the occasional pat-down, and boarding a plane would be quick and easy, but it’s not so much that way now. It takes hours to be able to get through the lines or get through airport security, going through all of the x-ray checkers, making sure that you have nothing that could harm anyone else. This was influenced greatly after the 9/11 attacks, because we realized that these hijackers got through our security and were able to harm people. When the old airport security was in place, the hijackers easily smuggled box cutters onto the planes or flights headed to California. The main reason they chose these planes is because they were packed with lots of jet fuel, since they were going across the country. This would produce a larger explosion. They turned our modern day vehicles into guided missiles. Another major impact that is still lasting today is the effect of surveillance. All of our internet feed, anything we do online, cell phone calls, anything is recorded and taken note of. This is to monitor if anything is going to happen to our nation, and to keep all of us safe. Many people disagree with the so called “Spying” of our personal lives, and there are many different theories that people have said, on why the NSA keeps records of all of this. The attacks still effect everyone today, whether it be someone who lost a loved one during the attacks, or just another citizen here, we all still feel it, and we will never forget it. Al-Qaeda was our prime suspect in these attacks. al-Qaeda is an islamic terrorist group. Nineteen militants associated with the extremist group, hijacked four of our airliners and carried out suicide attacks against us. It was confirmed that al-Qaeda did it, when Osama Bin Laden, their leader, released a video admitting to the crime. In september of 2001, President George Bush announced that he wanted Osama Bin Laden captured dead or alive. A $25 million bounty was issued for Bin Laden. The search begins. A long time later, on May 2nd, 2011 on orders form President Obama, a small team of U.S. Navy SEALS shot and killed the al-Qaeda leader. Some of the hijackers from the attacks are alive and well, according to BBC and the guardian. The United States defeated the Taliban. This took a while, but we had great support in the works of doing this. Over 100 countries offered increased intelligence support, as well as approximately 150 arrests and detentions of terrorists and suspected supporters of terrorism in over 25 countries. Also, we intensified counter terrorists operations with over 200 intelligence and security agency services worldwide. We sent many troops to defeat the Taliban. Approximately 29,000 military personnel, 349 military aircraft, 1 Amphibious Ready Group, and 2 Carrier Battle Groups were deployed by the Department of Defense (or DOD). As well as 17,000 members were called to active duty, as well as several thousand National Guard operating under State authority. During Operation Freedom (Where we sent troops to Afghanistan), we worked with members of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan. As well as we have worked with Italian soldiers. During this time, it wasn’t just Osama Bin Laden we were after, says Richard B. Myers, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Bin Laden “Has handfuls of lieutenants we want to go after,” he also noted. “We know who they are, they already have rewards on their heads, and we’ll follow them wherever they go,” he concluded.
