The first way the Constitution helps protect against tyranny is Federalism. Federalism is basically a really intricate word for powers that are given to the central government and the states. Document A specifies that the states can establish local governments
and schools, and can also hold elections. While the central government can conduct offshore relations, regulate trade, and can even declare war. James Madison once said that “The power is surrendered by the people and it is divided into two distinct and separate departments. The different governments will control each other, but at the same time they will be controlled by itself.” I think what Madison is trying to say is that they have just enough power to control their part and that they don’t control everything. Basically the state government has enough power to help their needs and that the central government has enough authority to help with the country’s needs. Based on these results you may can to the conclusion that sharing power between them prevents tyranny.
Another way the Constitution helps defends against tyranny by applying checks and balances. In Document C, it states “....the constant target is to divide and organize the several offices in such a manner that they might be able to check one another…. (The Three Branches) should not be so far apart that they could not control one another.” It essentially means that that the other branches should be able to check on one another and that they all have the same amount of authority. By using this system it means that they can all control what gets approved and disapproved and checking to make sure what the other branches has done. If a single branch becomes overwhelmed with power, then it could be considered tyranny, and in this instance, that branch has complete control over the entire government. So by using this system of checks and balances the Constitution can help stop tyranny in the US..
