That was working until he lost his suitcase full of all he owned and his apartment was burned down and all of his possessions were gone and he didn't know how to go on without material goods, which was his entire life in his mind his identity. It was his way of expressing himself because otherwise he felt his life was boring buying things helped fill voids in his life.

The concept of identity was a feature part of the film because as I mentioned before and the narrator was dealing with insomnia and his doctor told him to go visit the testicular cancer wing to witness real pain. That showed him how illness can change a person's perspective and emotion towards all of these sick patients. Then when Marla shows up faking like the narrator doesn't have the same affect that it did prior to her arrival.
The narrator needed to find a new outlet to express himself that's when he found Tyler and the creation of fight club which gave him that masculine identity and something new to focus on after for much of his early life he focused generally on material possessions and not emotions and general interaction with both of the men and women.
Finding an identity is definitely hard when you know one way of life so is interesting to watch the narrator navigate through this journey he has in the movie. The biggest take away is that the narrator realizes that life is not all about the stuff you have it's about the things you do the sacrifices you make to have a better life and the people you touch in the process.
