When supporting child and young person development I need to learn how to meet each individual’s needs. By observing a child or young people in a structured way enables me to find out what their individual needs are and how best I can support them by reflecting their interest and views, providing play opportunities for young children and through providing challenges to children in a safe environment. Emotional transition | Example of transition | Support that can be given | Change In family circumstances | * Parent may separate/divorce * New people might join the family/step-brother, step-father or mother, the child might not feel comfortable, or feel alone. * New sibling might be born, this could make the child feel alone as the parents attention would go more to the baby and the child may try to seek attention on a wrong way, by misbehaving * Someone close to the child might become ill or die (Bereavement) * Family may become short of money and not be able to afford proper food or become wealthier * Parent might start working away from home or work longer hours and sometimes work in another country because the lack of jobs, the child would not be able to see the parent as much and would miss him affecting him or her emotionally * Parents might lose their job or work from home | * Work closely with parents and share information about the child’s needs * Be ready to give children time so that they can talk about what is happening if they wish to * Allow children to express their feelings * Reassure the child * Look out for more information from specialist organisations such as www.winstonswish.org.uk and also local bereavement organisations for helping a child to cope with bereavement | Changes in friendship | * A friend might move away * Friendship might change | * Encourage children to express their feelings * Help children
