Contributions of Edward Deming “In 1950, Japanese businessmen turned to an obscure American from Wyoming to help them rebuild an economy shattered in World War II. The industrial expert, W. Edwards Deming, taught Japan’s manufacturers how to produce top quality products economically. The Japanese used this knowledge to turn the global economy on its head and beat U.S. industry at its own game” (McInnis D. 2011). Edwards Deming was born in Iowa in 1900 and seven years later the family moved to Wyoming. He received his formal education at the University of Wyoming and also attended school at University of Colorado and Yale University. It was in this period he developed an interest in using statistics to improve manufacturing processes. He was introduced to Walter Shewhart at Bell Telephone Laboratories and Shewhart influenced his ideas on how statistical methods could be applied to other area besides manufacturing (Tortorella M. 1995). During World War II, he taught statistics at Sanford University and felt that there was not enough of a commitment from upper management to support his quality principles. Deming felt that upper management had to be part of the solution if quality was to succeed (Tortorella M. et.al., 1995). He believed it was better to design the manufacturing process so the product would be built with quality from the start instead of inspecting the product for defects after it was built (McInnis D. et. al., 2011). The first interested group in his ideas was the Japanese. “Japan had every reason to give Deming a chance. Much of the country was flattened in World War II by Allied bombing raids and two of their cities were obliterated by the first military use of the atomic bomb. To rebuild their shattered country, the Japanese believed they must become global exports of high-quality manufactured products. For them, Deming’s ideas were a perfect fit (McInnis D. et. al., 2011). Deming
