When Winston is being tortured he goes through hell. What makes it even worse is that his torturer, is experienced and knows how to inflict a lot of pain in order to get the results he wants. "You are afraid," said O'Brien, watching his face, "that in another moment something is going to break. Your especial fear is that it will be your backbone. You have a vivid mental picture of the vertebrae snapping apart and the spinal fluid dripping out of them. That is what you are thinking, is it not, Winston?" (Orwell 245). The party member, O’Brien, is using extreme torture by almost breaking Winston’s back completely. All Winston can think about is his backbone breaking which allows for O’Brien to convince him of anything he wants. Winston must give-in in order to stop the pain and stop his back from breaking. It is very clear that this is not O’Brien’s first time. As he knows exactly what he is doing and it is working very well. The effectiveness of the torture performed by O’Brien is shown when Winston is asking him if there is someone that he can give up to the government in order for his torture to stop. “Is there somebody else you want me to give away?
