The whole entire book the people are continuously being manipulated and there many examples to show how this has affected their people.
Hate week is an example of manipulation of the whole society. Hate week is where the party increases hatred for the current party’s enemy. For example, “The dark-haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out “Swine! Swine! Swine” and suddenly she picked up a heavy Newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen.” (Orwell 17). This woman in this quote has only known hate week and she see’s it as a normal activity in everyday society. In addition, “The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obligated to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in.”(Orwell 17) . Even the people in the book if they did know they were being brainwashed they had no choice in getting out of activities like Hate Week. The government ultimately has total dominance of most everything but can’t control those like Winston who ultimately escape their manipulating
ways. Controlled information is another example of total dominance in the party. For instance, “Today he should commemorate Comrade Ogilvy. It was true that there was no such person as Comrade Ogilvy, but a few lines of print and a couple of faked photographs would soon bring him into existence. (Orwell 52). Winston works in the records department and he really enjoys coming up with crazy articles to make the party’s story look good on paper but this a type of total dominance. The records Winston changes affects those who read them therefore altering the truth. In addition, “Comrade Ogilvy, who had never existed in the present, now existed in the past, and when once the act of forgery was forgotten, he would exist just as authentically, and upon the same evidence, as Charlemagne or Julius Caesar.”(Orwell 53) Those who work in the records department hold so much power and change the past in history. The fake person Winston made up is now as important as Julius Caesar a famous lunatic leader. We as people learn from our mistakes and what has happen in the past so if we were in Winston’s party we would never actually know what the truth of the matter is.
