This is due to a lack of an education. Individuals are unaware of the past and current events that have led to the development of the hate symbols which ultimately causes them to not know what is right from wrong when addressing these symbols. They may use these symbols and speech talk when they do not mean any harm, yet can make someone extremely upset. In 1984, many of the citizens have never known of other kinds of political governments besides their own, Big Brother. The government forces slogans onto them and since they do not know the true meaning and have nothing else to guide off of, they apply it to their life. Near the middle of 1984, Winston begins to talk about Katherine. He begins to state that she may be first thought of as noble and intelligent, yet, she is “the most stupid, vulgar, empty mind that he had ever encountered. She had not a thought in her head that was not a slogan, and there was no imbecility, absolutely none, that she was not capable of swallowing if the Party handed it out to her" (66). Katherine listens to every word of the government, repeats what they say and has “not a thought in her head that was not a slogan”. This is a prime example of how the lack of an education and knowledge of their government may cause individuals to use the hate symbols and speech when given to them merely because it is the only form of government they are aware
