Controlled Burning Benefits
Controlled Burns

Controlled burning is helpful and can be used for many reasons that are beneficial to the forest or burnt area. Controlled burns can; prevent further naturally started fires by burning out all the leftover dry material, get rid of dead plants to make room for new vegetation to grow which in turn creates new homes for animals, and can even help the soil gain nutrients. Some believe that controlled burning isn't necessary and that the chance for the fire to go out of control is too high a risk to take. However, the percentage of reported escaped fires is only a mere 1%. To many, it makes more sense to use controlled burning will all of its benefits than to worry about the very unlikely possibility that the fire will go out of control. Using controlled fires is becoming a more popular practice these days. This is due to the success rate of controlled fires along with the environmentally beneficial factors.

A benefit of controlled burning is that they can reduce the threat of large wildfires which in turn leads to helping and protecting the forest in many ways. Wildfires can "threaten public safety, impair forest and ecosystem health, and degrade air quality" (Daniel Boone National Forest 1). If dry brush is not burnt out in a safe controlled manner the risk for wildfires grows very large along with the risk of these effects. Wildfires can, and have, run very out of control and destroy peoples homes and put many in severe danger. This is just one of the reasons why controlled burns can be life saving. Controlled burns also save animals lives because wildfires can destroy entire ecosystems which help animals live. By using controlled burns to prevent wildfires its saves many

To begin with, fire originally comforted and warmed people. “…in the old days, before homes were completely fire proofed-,” (34). In the past, people used fire to cook or keep warm. Fire wasn’t always used to destroy homes that contained books. In fact homes were once completely fire proofed. Instead of setting fires, firemen were the ones who put them out. “…and so when houses were finally fire proofed completely all over the world, there was no longer a need of firemen for old purposes”, (58). There was a time when homes were all completely fire proofed. With that, there was no longer a need for them. Eventually firemen evolved from fire-fighters to “fire-starters”. They began to start fires in order to control the people. Fire was once a good thing in many people’s eyes.…

There are some disadvantages to consider when using this tactic. The main issue is that it needs to be performed 100% correctly, or it is ineffective. If it is not done correctly or in the appropriate situation, there is a great risk of pushing the fire. Temperatures could rise substantially and smoke could fill adjacent rooms and/or previously uninvolved areas. Defensive back up crews and resources…

Probably the most shocking thing I learned during all this was that some fires and controlled burns are actually good for not only the woods itself but it is also beneficial to the surrounding ecosystem. The burns prevent the forest from becoming overgrown, and make them unmanageable. Burns also help to get rid of the bottomland species that seem to dominate most forest floors. We were also made aware that the best time to burn is during the lightning season, and that most woodland needed to be burned about once every third year.…

The discovery of fire, or, more precisely, the controlled use of fire was, of necessity, one of the earliest of human discoveries. Fire 's purposes are multiple, some of which are to add light and heat, to cook plants and animals, to clear forests for planting, to heat-treat stone for making stone tools, to burn clay for ceramic objects.…
