Controlled burning is helpful and can be used for many reasons that are beneficial to the forest or burnt area. Controlled burns can; prevent further naturally started fires by burning out all the leftover dry material, get rid of dead plants to make room for new vegetation to grow which in turn creates new homes for animals, and can even help the soil gain nutrients. Some believe that controlled burning isn't necessary and that the chance for the fire to go out of control is too high a risk to take. However, the percentage of reported escaped fires is only a mere 1%. To many, it makes more sense to use controlled burning will all of its benefits than to worry about the very unlikely possibility that the fire will go out of control. Using controlled fires is becoming a more popular practice these days. This is due to the success rate of controlled fires along with the environmentally beneficial factors. …show more content…
Controlled burning is more beneficial than just taking no action.
A benefit of controlled burning is that they can reduce the threat of large wildfires which in turn leads to helping and protecting the forest in many ways. Wildfires can "threaten public safety, impair forest and ecosystem health, and degrade air quality" (Daniel Boone National Forest 1). If dry brush is not burnt out in a safe controlled manner the risk for wildfires grows very large along with the risk of these effects. Wildfires can, and have, run very out of control and destroy peoples homes and put many in severe danger. This is just one of the reasons why controlled burns can be life saving. Controlled burns also save animals lives because wildfires can destroy entire ecosystems which help animals live. By using controlled burns to prevent wildfires its saves many
lives.
Clearing away dead brush with controlled burning can make way for new vegetation to be planted. Allowing this vegetation to have a place to grow "promotes a large and varied wildlife population" (The Bugwood Network 1). Having more vegetation in an area provides many homes for all different types of animals. Some animals such as "deer, dove, quail, and turkey are...species that benefit from prescribed fire" (The Bugwood Network 1). Having these animals to occupy the forest is good because fruit and seed production is fueled. Wildlife are also important in maintaining the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air. The trees need the carbon dioxide to make oxygen and the animals need the oxygen to survive.
There are many people who believe controlled burns should not be used. Many say that "fires release greenhouse gases that make for a vicious cycle of rising temperatures and increasing wildfires" (Honn 1). These people believe that if controlled burns continue to be used they will add too many greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere. Although fires do produce greenhouse gases, if controlled fires are not used than it will eventually lead to bigger and more widespread fires which will end up causing more greenhouse gases to be created in the end. So in the end is it worth it to use controlled burns? Many people have different views on the subject.
Overall, controlled burns have many benefits. Controlled burns prevent further wildfires and provide a place for new vegetation to grow. New vegetation and less wildfires ultimately means more homes for animals and species of the current area. It also means keeping nearby residence safer. Although, not everything that controlled burns contribute is a benefit(the creation of greenhouse gasses), the pros of using controlled burns outweigh the cons for many. In conclusion, using controlled burns contributes much to humans, animals, and plants.
