To Kill a Mockingbird is a controversial subject to many people. Some of the subject in it are racism, prejudice, sexual assault, and abuse. Overall, the main part that would definitely cause controversy over this book is the trial. Throughout this part of the book, Harper Lee paints a different image than that of what we usually know about the judicial system. Now, we think that the judicial system is fair, that there is no prejudice, and that you won’t be judged for something that you may not have done. During this trial, there was prejudice, there was not fairness, and there was definitely unjust judgment. At the time, nothing was fair for People of color. Even though a person is a person no matter the color of their skin. It is sad to think that we still have people with these opinions today. In many places people display confederate flags and treat people of color with the utmost disrespect. Due to these opposite opinions, there is definitely arguments. This book is the perfect representation of conflict and wrongdoing due to a simple opinion. Atticus even knows that he won’t win the case and when Scout asks him he says, “ ‘No honey.’ ‘Then why—‘ ‘Simply because we were licked a hundred years before is no reason for us not to try to win,’”(101) Mayella Ewell lied under oath, framed an innocent man, and in many ways caused both his and her father’s deaths. She did this because she was abused; she was scared. Although, it was not her fault that she lied because I’m sure that if she had told the truth, her own father Bob Ewell would have beat her, and might have even gone as far as to kill her. The real culprit is her father. He was the one who traumatized Mayella so much that she lied and protected her abuser.
