Date of Assignment 11 January 2008 Convincing a Friend to Quit Smoking My friend Larry has been smoking for about twenty years now. His health has be gain to deteriorate. Running his two-mile run at PT (a military acronym for Physical Training) has gotten harder for him and his heart rate beats like a drummer in a band playing a drum roll. Larry’s doctor has explained to him that he needs to quit smoking and why he needs to quit smoking. Smoking is one of the leading causes of death, curves your appetite and causes you to gain weight. As a good friend to Larry I am trying to help him by convincing Larry to quit smoking. I knew it was not going to be easy to accomplish. I researched as much information as I could to help Larry. Information like smoking causes cancer, heart attacks, as well as the fact that cigarette tobacco has a lot of different chemicals in it. Some examples are, Arsenic (used in rat poison), Cadmium (used in batteries) and Hydrogen Cyanide (used in gas chambers). I explained to Larry that continuing to smoke could cause cancer or a heart attack. I also told him he should think about the effect smoking has on his family. When I offered to help Larry, he was glad of the thought of some one helping him to quit smoking. I let him know that I respected his decision and will be taking him seriously about wanting to quit smoking. I also explained to him the different type of poisons he was inhaling into his body, hoping that would make him think about what he was doing to his-self by smoking. Smoking was lowering his hormone level and continuing to smoke would cause him to get sick more often. To help him quit I mentioned that he should exercise to get his mind off smoking, eat healthier and try to keep busy around the office, since there is no smoking in government buildings

Smoking is never a healthy habit. I would advise Mike to speak with his doctor about finding ways to help him stop smoking. There are many assistive devices available by prescription such as Chantix and Wellbutrin. Over-the-counter remedies that can work include nicotine patches. These patches are available in 14mg and 21mg strength based on the amount of cigarettes you smoke per day. Nicotine gum can be discretely used in public places and is also available without a prescription. Additionally, a…

We developed an understanding of the long and short term risks with smoking through researching on the internet on websites to do with cancer research and ASH. We discovered a lot of benefits to stopping smoking. One benefit was that their life expectancy increased and stopping also helped their lungs to recover and decreased the risk of contracting diseases such as Emphysema. We found information about pregnant women and their unborn children and how smoking can effect them. We found that the child could be miscarried, or they could have a considerably lower birth rate compared to other children whose mothers didn’t smoke during their pregnancy. Furthermore, we also found information about how harmful passive smoking is to children and adults. We found out that young children could experience cot death and become deaf through middle ear disease. Furthermore, we found information supporting that adults could contract lung cancer through passive smoke which we found was 80% invisible.…

I heard when I was younger that you are more likely to get cancer if you quit smoking. I do not know if that is true and I do not want to. If you can get through the first hour of wondering how you’re going to quit and put the packet in the bin you will be ok. And if you can honestly convince yourself without a full on argument in your head about why you…

The Center for disease Control reports that cigarette smoke causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is about one in five deaths. The center adds that smoking causes more deaths every year than Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm- related incidents. With this being a known fact there are still smokers in today’s world. The question that should be asked is why do people smoke cigarettes despite their proven dangers? Smoking cannot only damage or bring harm to every organ in the human body, but it can cause countless diseases. If people just stopped smoking altogether, they would decrease the risk of smoke-related diseases and most importantly…

Most people known somewhat of the problems associated with tobacco consumption yet, smoking has become a trend in the world of today, even though people know how harmful it is. Smoking causes are obvious it will tear down and destroy your health and give you a series of health issues that cling to you for the rest of your life. In America 85% of the teenage population first start smoking around the ages of fifteen and sixteen, and they soon find out smoking tobacco is incredibly addicting. Smoking causes heart diseases, higher blood pressure, multiple deadly cancers such as, lung cancer, mouth cancer and throat cancer. Many of my relatives have succumbed to some sort of terrible effect from smoking, and I myself was once a smoker until I discovered the complications it had with my heart along with cigarettes claiming the life of my grandmother. Unfortunately some of the people who start smoking do not quit after they realize they are having health issues, or rather they have no choice on quitting. This is a complication which arises because of being dependent and addicted to the nicotine hidden deep within the weaves of lies that make up the majority of tobacco products and most adults who start smoking in their teen years never expected to become addicted.…

In another article in the Harm Reduction Journal, Riccardo Polosa, Brad Rodu, Pasquale Caponnetto, Marilena Maglia, and Cirino Raciti argue most smokers are faced with few options when they are looking to quit. They describe how tobacco harm reduction is the key to reducing the long-term health risks of smoking because this method involves removing tobacco combustion from the equation. They claim that nicotine by itself has little to no health risks and has even been shown to be beneficial to treat certain conditions such as depression and attention disorders. As a result, when complete nicotine cessation takes place, these underlying conditions are left untreated. And finally, they argue that if harm reduction policies were put into effect, potentially “millions of lives could be saved” and potential costs could be avoided (Polosa et al. 7). In my life, both of my grandparents were hard smokers and suffered from smoking related conditions. If only they had known that other alternatives were available, I am certain they would have given them a try. It makes me sad that other alternatives were available to help them and if only they had been properly educated they could still potentially be…

Some teens and adults use smoking as a lifestyle coping tool; to relieve stress, relax, calm nerves, look mature, or use it as a conversation centerpiece. Regardless of the reason a person smokes the outcome is still the same, addiction and damage to the body or possible death. Part of a health care professional’s responsibility is to educate people on the dangers of addictions and encourage them to quit in addition to providing the necessary resources. Over the many years, various models have been developed to help nurses target certain health behaviors and help adjust or change them. The outcome may not always be a positive result, but the only thing one can do is use the tools already created to help alter a person’s perception of their behavior/habit. There may be some who do not try to quit, some may attempt to quit but fail, and some may not see the dangers of a habit that makes them feel good. At the end of the day it is up to the person to accept the help/education and put it to…

Bad breath, yellow teeth, a chronic cough--these are some of the disgusting results of smoking cigarettes. Why do people continue to smoke when the effects are so harmful? The typical response from smokers to this question is that they smoke to relax and help relieve stress. Unfortunately, the quick fix are an addictive narcotic. Smoking feeds the addiction, but it also feeds the body with about 40 cancer-causing chemicals as well as almost 4,000 other chemicals.[5] When a smoker comes to the conclusion that they really want to quit that is a major stepping stone in their lives. It could be for personal reasons or health reasons. With that thought there must be a million questions come to mind. Are they going to try Cold Turkey? Are they going to gain weight after they quit? My top-dog risk factor as determined by the cancer and CVD risk factor assessment is hands down smoking. Although I do not smoke profusely, on a stressful or long day at work I’ve been known to smoke roughly a pack a day, although I don’t think I’ve ever exceeded that. I am actually ashamed to have ever started smoking, it almost killed both grandparents on my dad’s side of the family. I can feel my chest tightening on some days but not enough for it to be an inhibition on work I can still work all day and run five miles fairly easily. Needless to say though smoking is still wreaking havoc on my cardiovascular system, whether I can feel it affecting my now or not. Not only that but the fear of getting cancer is overwhelming so there are several steps that can be taken to eliminate the risk factors associated with smoking. Namely, stopping smoking obviously. In order to stop I plan to buy an electronic cigarette and attempt to wean myself off of the real-deal. I know that most of them only emit water vapor impregnated with nicotine to curb the craving for a cigarette. Although I was supposed to give three examples of how I could reduce this risk, I feel that simply stating that I am attempting to quit is sufficient, because once I’ve quit what more is there to do if I’m not smoking and creating that risk factor for myself.…

Smoking has been a long term issue since cigarettes were invented. The high amount of tobacco added many dangers to the mixtures. Not only is smoking dangerous because of its physically altering diseases, it also has fatal risks. One of the most common forms of fatality caused by cigarettes is cancer, mainly in the throat and lung. Tobacco cigarettes have been taking people’s lives for quite some time now. However, a solution for helping these people stimulate their nicotine addiction has been found. That solution is electronic cigarettes. They are tubes powered by a battery that, when activated, inject a mixture of nicotine and water vapor from a cartridge into the breather’s mouth. These devices were considered revolutionary but also have generated a lot of controversy due to people fearing they are just as dangerous as regular cigarettes and the Kansas government is now considering adding them to part of the already placed No-Smoking-In-Public policy. I’m speaking to pro—health Kansas government officials who could potentially pass a ban on electronic cigarettes. I am addressing this issue because of my personal connection to smokers. My mother is a regular smoker, she smokes a pack a week and I fear it may get more frequent if she does not find a way to contain her addiction. My father was a smoker but was able to quit after a two-year attempt at smoker abstinence. This was sparked by a doctor’s diagnosis that his lungs were already showing signs of deterioration, but no cancer was found. He put down the cigarettes and he was successful. Considering the information I have put together in research of these devices, I want to address that electronic cigarettes should be allowed in public because of their lack of danger; they will be beneficial if permitted because they are not considered deadly, they can influence better and healthier smoking habits, plus passive…
