“The Health Complications of Tobacco Use”
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the health risks of smoking tobacco products.
Central Idea: There are numerous health hazards to smoking tobacco, some that many people may not be aware of.

Introduction
I. Did you know that smoking tobacco is the number one cause of lung cancer?
A. You might say that is obvious, but what many of you may not know is that smoking tobacco can cause over a dozen other cancers.
II. There are many facts as to why people smoke.
A. For many people, tobacco products are a source of stress relief or pleasure.
B. Others smoke tobacco due
to habit, in order to fill their addiction.
III. However, with the knowledge gained from my Bachelor’s in Science as well as my interest in human health, there are many health risks that arise from smoking tobacco products.
(Transition: We will begin by going over the different tobacco products and substances in those products.)
Body I. There are many tobacco products that people smoke and harmful substances within those products. A. Cigarettes are the most commonly smoked tobacco product, due to availability and ease of use.
1. Cigarettes are made with finely cut tobacco, with many additives added to the tobacco in order to preserve the tobacco and flavor.
2. Cigarettes contain a range of 7,000 different chemicals. a. Most contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and also used as an insecticide. b. Cadmium, which is a metal used for creating batteries. c. Formaldehyde, a chemical typically used for preservation of deceased bodies for purposes such as dissection.
B. Cigars are also commonly smoked.
1. Cigars consist of dehydrated and cured tobacco, which is rolled within a paper.
2. Most cigars do not contain a filter.
3. Tobacco within cigars contains many chemicals and flavors. C. Hookah is another custom through which tobacco is smoked, and is heavily used throughout the Middle East. 1. The tobacco for hookah usually contains a mixture of natural flavors and a very high amount of nicotine.
(Transition: We will now educate the audience on the effects that smoking has on human health.)
II. The effects that these substances have on human health. A. Many of the substances mentioned earlier that are found within cigarettes are carcinogens, which is a substance that can cause cancer. 1. Benzene is a well-known carcinogen, which can cause leukemia. 2. Cadmium can cause lung cancer as well as breast cancer. B. The substances within tobacco that don’t cause cancer can still have severe health consequences. 1. Those who smoke typically have more respiratory problems. 2. Women who smoke before or during pregnancy have a higher chance of birth complications C. For nonsmokers who are exposed to smoke due to being near someone while smoking, we refer to this as secondhand smoke.
Conclusion
I. After going in depth on tobacco products, the effects they have on the human body are clear. A. The range of substances within these tobacco products are the cause. B. These substances have negative effects on the human body.
II. Hopefully, people will identify the wide scope of health risks that smoking tobacco products hold.
