Copd Learning Plan

My learning plan focused on enhancing my skills on health education and improving my clients’ knowledge. In particular, I planned to increase the staff’s and the client’s (who has COPD) knowledge on COPD. I was determined to do this because of the observations I made while in the group home. To begin with, my preceptor informed me herself that she and the staff do not know much about COPD (e.g., pathophysiology, symptoms, and interventions). Also, I observed the client’s lack of knowledge about COPD management such that he rarely drank water nor washed his hands before meals. These behaviors can worsen his condition as inadequate water intake can make it more difficult for the client to breathe and improper hand hygiene can increase risk for infections. I was able to confirm the staff’s limited knowledge by administering a survey. The survey consists of a few questions about COPD (e.g., what conditions compromise COPD and what COPD strategies do
These behaviors include, drinking water, washing hands before meals, and relaxing (e.g., avoid speed walking when going to the dining table). I planned to write short phrases on the poster and draw a picture around the phrases. To determine if the patient can read, my preceptor and I showed him a poster that wrote “Celebration!” We asked him to read the poster but he just pointed to the drawing and said “snowman.” Again, my preceptor and I pointed to the word and asked him if he could read it and he said “I can’t.” Upon learning the client’s limitation, my preceptor suggested to keep the phrases but just add more visuals on the poster that portray the intended behaviors. Furthermore, I tried to show my preceptor my drafts a couple of days ahead before the due date to get timely and constructive feedback so I can fix and improve the presentation and poster.
