Henry IV a Huguenot prince inherited the French throne in 1589. For four years, right after he took up the throne he fiercely fought for control of France against catholic oppression, and to end the fighting finally he changed to Catholicism. Even though he was now officially a catholic, he issued the Edict of Nantes in 1598 that provided Huguenots religious freedom. After all, of that Henry IV set out to fix all the damage he had done. He said his goal was not the victory of one sec over another but “a chicken in every pot”-a good sun-day dinner for every peasant. While Henry ruled, the Government was everywhere officials administered justice, improved roads, built bridges, and revived agriculture. Henry IV was assassinated in 1610 twenty-one years after he inherited the throne which was passed down to his nine year old son Louis XIII.…

In Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backwards, the 19th century was a time full of war and poverty. Julian West was an aristocrat who noticed the gap between rich and poor. Although he could do anything to change that, he dwelled on the thought. Suffering from insomnia, West is put to sleep by a hypnotist one night, only to wake up over 100 years later in a Doctor’s room. Much to his dismay, the hypnotism kept him alive in a state where he did not age, allowing him to live that long. In the end, West woke up to realize that it was just a dream. During his dream he was in the 20th century where everyone had a high standard of living and individualism was…

The book I read from the New Earth Archive was In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. The book analyzed the foods we eat and talks about the traditional American diet. It says that this western diet is more harmful than beneficial despite the breakthrough in nutirionism. The reader soon learns that this growing obsession with nutritionism is ironically hurting our diet more than it is helping it. This obsession has led us to scientifically alter food to boost the level of vitamins and nutrients in our food; to make it “healthier.”…

What it must have been if we would have born a hundred years ago? There must have been a big round lawn with rooms on all four sides in a village. On one side there is an open area where our cattle are kept. The faint kip clop of horse coming from the street indicates that our father is coming along with his brothers after ploughing fields for a whole day. Our grandfather sits in the centre of the lawn as the chief executive of the family. Our father along with his other brothers enters the home. Say hello to father and gives him the details of what they have done today. My mother along with the wives of my uncles prepares dinner in the kitchen under the guidance and supervision of my old grandmother. All the children set the anchors to the cattle. The dinner is ready now. Everybody sits together and chats while enjoying the dinner. After dinner the girls of the family set the beds and everybody goes asleep. We say good night and go asleep peacefully. What a happy family that must be, full of love, affection and harmony.…
