Heart diseases are one of the most killing diseases in the United States, where there are more than half a million people die of a hteart the disease every year. That is a 1 in every 4 deaths, which is a very huge number. (wc) About 370 thousands of these people die of the most killing type which is the coronary heart disease. (1) Since the coronary heart disease is very common nowadays, people should be educated on what exactly it is and how it happens, its risk factors, and how to prevent it from happening.
Coronary heart disease happen when the plaques, a waxy substances, build up inside the coronary arteries causing it to get narrower. Coronary arteries are the arteries that supply the patient's heart muscle with the oxygen-rich blood. The condition of the plaques building up is called Atherosclerosis and it occurs over many years. The plaques can harden and break open narrowing the coronary arteries over time. When the plaques harden the flow of the oxygen-rich blood is to going to be reduced. Sometimes, the plaques rupture causing a blood clot to form on its surface. Large blood clots can easily and completely block the flow of blood causing the heart to stop. (2) …show more content…
Plaques building up mostly happen because of the high blood cholesterol level, which is a condition when the blood has too much cholesterol.
Cholesterol is a fat-like waxy substance. The levels of blood cholesterol gets high for many reasons. Some reasons cannot be controlled such as, family history, gender, or age. Fortunately the other risk factor could be controlled. For example, smokers can quit smoking, overweight patients could try to begin a healthier lifestyle, and so on.

There are a lot of ways to prevent the coronary heart disease or other heart diseases from happening. Heart-healthy eating, which means eating a lot of nutrient-rich food, such as, fruit and vegetables. Limiting unhealthy fats by limiting the saturated and trans fats that the patient eats could be really helpful for reducing the cholesterol level in the blood and by that the risk of the plaques building is reduced also. Trying to maintain the patients weight by controlling the portion is really important to avoid obesity. (4)
Coronary heart disease is killing lots of people in the past few years and people should know what is it and try to learn how to avoid it and stay healthy because it could be dangerous and fatal when found out too late.
