Introduction
Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre took place on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut. A 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot 20 school children and 6 adult staff members of the Sandy Hook Elementary school. During Investigation, the officers found that Lanza was in possession of thousands of dollars worth of violent video games. This re-initiated the debate on the relationship …show more content…
In this scenario, the variables are playing violent video games and aggressive behaviour.
There is some evidence to suggest that there is a link between playing violent video games and showing more aggressive tendencies, at least in the short term.
For example, in a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology in year 2013, participants played either a violent or non-violent video game for 20 minutes per day over 3 days. After playing the game, they then played a competitive task in which, if they won, they could blast their opponent with an unpleasant noise. The researchers found that participants who played violent games blasted their opponents in the secondary task for longer, which was interpreted as an increase in aggressive behaviour.
One problem with correlation method is that it is often misinterpreted. Frequently , individuals assume that because two variables are correlated then there must be some sort of causal relationship between the variables. This is not true. Correlation does not imply causation. Correlation simply means that the two variables are related in some way. This topic deals with correlation analysis in detail.
Correlation Analysis of two …show more content…
For example height and weight of the individual are correlated. The relationship is such that an increase in one variable (height) is generally accompanied by an increase in another variable (weight). Knowing this relationship, we can predict the individual weight with a certain degree of accuracy , based on the knowledge of the individual's height. This is computed based on regression analysis. This would be dealt in subsequent topics.
Correlation analysis contributes to the understanding of economic behaviors, enables to identify critically important variables on which other depend. This enables the economist to determine the connection by which the disturbances spread and suggest to him the paths through which the stabilizing forces may become effective.
Most of the variables show some kind of relationship. For example , there is a relationship between price and supply, income and expenditure. Executives perform correlation analysis to estimate the cost, sales, prices and other variables on the basis of some other variables with which these variables are functionally
