is our own behavior as social beings (Giddens: 2)”. The area that surrounds the study of sociology focuses on behavior and how it affects and influences lives as individuals and as a society. It analyzes and explains the reasons why people act the way they do in society and societies actions as a whole. Sociology is looking outside of the society, taking a broader view. All the rules and norms in society guide people in their daily lives for example; In our society, if something is done by majority it is considered the 'right' thing to do, therefore people will follow. According to Sumner (sociologyguide.com) many social norms are concerned with ’should’. “The ’should behaviors’ are what Sumner called ’folkways’, that is; the conservative way of doing things within groups in society” (sociologyguide.com). However, are not defined as being crucial in the survival as an individual or as a society. The study of sociology not only analyses this but, looks at the structures and Institutions that revolve around the operation of the social world.
People are set in social and structural influences in life that go back in history and shows as the structures in society evolve, individuals evolve with it. There are many areas in life that groups in society are set on whether it is religious views, routine or culture. However, this all came from behavior past and present and this is what sociology entails, figuring out the antecedent to nearly justify the present and analyzing how as a society our values change in some ways and stay similar in others over time. The way we live our lives is to do with the society we know and the structures in it. Theorists such as ‘Marx‘, ‘Mills’ and ‘Durkheim’ have many theories on what makes a society and the actions it takes.

Status;” The differences between social groups in the social honor or prestige they are accorded by others. Status came to be expressed through people’s styles of life” (Weber: 285).According to Marx “status distinction is a result of the class divisions in society” (Giddens: 2001) as a result of the ‘mode of production’ we are in. “The main dynamic of modern development is the expansion of capitalistic economic mechanism. (Marx: 673)” class; Social class will always be a part of our society, it is a background analysis of where you originate from and what leads one to where they are today including beliefs and general way one lives their life.
It is also how you are judged as an individual, family, Occupation, wealth or lack of. Working, Middle and Upper class. Gender; Men and women have very different roles in society it seems that not only in the past but at present. Although it has become more advanced men more than not have a more valued rewarded role in society. Whereas women, always having an important role, were considered less powerful. inequality.
Culture; All different cultures have many different beliefs and views but not only does sociology look at the diversity of cultures, but the ways in which human behavior makes it a culture. For example, in western countries we have puppies as pets; however in China this can be considered a delicacy. The French eat snails; many Irish would be revolted at the thought of consuming a snail.
These are structures that are apart of societies and have always been a part of societies, although ever evolving these are a huge part of the way as groups people’s lives are operated by the many institutions within.
People within societies have certain freedom of what one chooses and how one approaches getting on in life, however there are many influences and regiments to be socially abided by even though as people may not be consciously aware of, tasks that we endeavor in our day to day lives. The media has a huge affect on our lives also does workplace, education, law, politics, family life, Religion and the economy. By becoming aware of the studies of the social sciences especially sociology Individuals can be more aware of their surroundings and prepared to analyze society for themselves. As a social care practitioner not to judge is extremely important but to understand is very beneficial. The knowledge of sociology can give a social care worker the tool to use thought and analysis in the way social divisions are. The affects on individuals living within different groups and structures plays a significant role in behavior. Analyzing behavior will lead to the eventual understanding of the
antecedent.
C. Wright Mills invented the term “Sociological Imagination”
"The first lesson of modern sociology is that the individual cannot understand his own experience or gauge his own fate without locating himself within the trends of his epoch and the life-chances of all the individuals of his social layer " (Mills: 1951: 20).
Mills theory on The “Sociological Imagination” explains and recognises the link between societal issues and the private problems of an individual.
