Many books fall under this category because they have ties to things not only in the United States but all over the world. Life of Pi is one of the most popular works in the genre of world literature. It was written by Yann Martel, a Canadian who was born in Spain. It is very popular because of its underlying meanings and details. What is on the surface of the book is minimal compared to its undertones. The book has major ties to religion and faith. In the beginning Pi is faced with a problem because he believes multiple religions, and that is not accepted by his parents. His ideas seem a little crazy but his parents come around to accept it. Religion is one of the biggest aspects to the book. This is because religion and faith go hand in hand. In the beginning of the book, Pi says “I'll be honest about it. It is not atheists who get stuck in my craw, but agnostics. Doubt is useful for a while. We must all pass through the garden of Gethsemane. If Christ played with doubt, so must we. If Christ spent an anguished night in prayer, if He burst out from the Cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" then surely we are also permitted to doubt. But we must move on. To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation”(Martel 76). This is one of the most important parts of the entire book.This shows how much faith Pi encompasses and what helped him through his journey. Faith is something that Pi had and that pushed him to keep going in his darkest times. From an educational standpoint, this quote gives a different outlook on what religion is and why it is a good thing to be educated on.
