When Carlos stepped into a Filipino poolroom hoping to find his brother, he witnessed a shot to a young Filipino, who died wierdly. Carlos described the reaction of other present Filipinos that “The player stopped for a moment, agitated, then resumed playing, their faces coloring with fear and revolt”(301). We can see how those Filipinos were accustomed to events like this: no shocking, no rebellion, only returning to what they were doing as nothing ever happened. It is true that he has an ‘American dream’ but obviously it is hard for him to realize his dream. Carlos also points out his brother’ s change after arriving in America because he believes that he was like his brother when they were in the Philipines; however, they were not that similar after his brother went to America. Undoubtedly, Carlos is implicating that not only his brother, but also all other American Filipinos, experienced this change. They were all ambitiou and motivated when they just came to this land, like Carlos, but for some reasons they became corrupted and callous
