We all face many challenges and setbacks in life, but it is whether we deal with them properly, that decides whether we move on. If we don’t overcome our challenges and setbacks, we could be dwelling on the one problem for a long time, because the longer we leave a problem to grow, the harder it becomes to deal with. Despite the fact that characters encounter challenges and setbacks throughout the whole novel, its overall message is quite optimistic. The four main challenges which are included in the novel, include death, pain, suffering, and separation. Erich and Vinnie faced the biggest challenges and setbacks out of all the characters in the novel. But eventually, they both summoned up the courage to confront their problems and move on.…

In the book, Red Kayak, by Priscilla Cummings, there are multiple themes. A theme is the main idea or underlying meaning of a literary work and it can be directly stated or implied. Being able to understand a theme is critical to decipher an author’s message. One of the numerous themes in Red Kayak is that death is everywhere and it can be very hard to deal with. In Red Kayak, Brady along with his friends, J.T. and Digger, live in the Chesapeake bay region of Maryland. All of them have great memories together and have been friends for a long time. Soon, rich people start moving in close proximity to where Brady and his parents live. This upsets families and friends (especially Digger). When Mrs. and Mr. DiAngelo move in, Brady discovers that…

I like this passage and overall the last few pages because it expresses Mattie’s feelings of her quest to kill Tom Chaney along with the people that helped her. The tone of this passage is very casual because of Mattie’s personality. The diction is formal, but Mattie uses the word “cowlick”, in reference to LaBeouf’s hair, which could be said to be different than her usual diction. The syntax is also formal. Mattie ends up the story in saying how fast time has gone by. The mood this passage creates is lethargic because Mattie is grown and no longer the fourteen-year-old teenager we have been accustomed to after reading the book. Mattie reminisces on her quest with Rooster and LeBoeuf and she is fulfilled by the death of Tom Chaney. This passage stuck out to me not only because it was the last we hear from Mattie, but in my opinion, ties up the story…

The main issue that Lesig tries to bring forth is the idea that campaign finance makes politics less ethical. Especially with new campaign finance laws, Lesig believes that the American people are losing their connection with their elected officials, and on longer have any influence in government. While, large corporations who can spend tons of money on campaigns and lobbying have ab unfair advantage. It is important to note, that Lesig, throughout his book does not paint these individuals as bad or unethical people. He instead points his finger at the system that these people get caught in. Lesig also tries to make this book as bi partisan as possible so both republicans and democrats can resonate with it, to show that this…

In Zeitoun written and published by Abdulrahman Zeitoun and Dave Eggers, the most powerful assertion made is that the government was corrupt during the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. This allegation is unfortunately accurate. Many citizens were left stranded in their homes, while the government gave orders to arrest innocent men and women who were still in the city of New Orleans, which also lead to the establishment of many corrupt government programs.…

It does always result in trying to escape that isolation, but when we are isolated from ourselves it resides within us, and escape is impossible. It sits closer to the concept of separateness rather than loneliness. It is clear that in “The End of the World”, the narrator’s isolationism is because of his own choice. I argue that the most important way in which the novel discusses isolation is to see it as an internal state which does not necessarily have anything to do with how isolated one is with regard to other people. Instead, it is to show that as even as social beings who constantly interact with others carry elements of isolationism in our lives. Marukami effectively makes the whole story subordinate to the theme of isolationism to relate the reader to his…

Dark, ominous clouds had completely covered the sky. The atmosphere was oppressive, not a sound could be heard. With the exception of a narrow window, he was enclosed in a bare, desolate room. There was no way out. Aaron got up from the ground, very slowly, with all the energy he had left. Worn-out, he finally managed to stand on his feet, before surrendering to the pain of his wounded legs; he fell on the hard bed. He was unsure of how he managed to survive, however his future was nothing but certain. Death was an imminent threat which Aaron had constantly been facing, and now even though the situation was superficially settled, he knew that there was a long path left to freedom. Aaron lied on the bed, with his eyes shut, remembering all the incidents that resulted him to find himself stuck in an extremely old and barren house, in the middle of nowhere.…
