He was born into a middle class banking family. As he grew up his father began to teach him more and more about the family business. At the age of seventeen, he took over his family’s business. He was put into power because his family thought that they would be able to manipulate him very easily, this however was not the case. Upon talking up the position, he proved that he was not only smart but a great business man. He started to make his fortune by continuing the families’ financial and commercial business.
He made his money by buying goods from the east that were small in weight but big in value so they could easily be transported and there was still a large margin of profit to be made. He also lent money to the high houses of Europe. His largest money making endeavor was from the pope. At that time Florence’s state religion was Catholicism therefore everyone had to pay tithes to the church, almost like a tax. The family who received the opportunity to do the banking for all of this money was the Medici family. The Medici family made money from this because they would take large sums of money and lend them to people who would then pay interest on that money. Making people pay interest on loans was illegal at the time but it was hidden in bills of exchange. This process was used when people wanted to exchange their money for that of another
