Cosmopolitanism and Person
The point of Appiah's essay is to explain the topic of cosmopolitanism is today's society. Basically, Appiah explains someone who is a cosmopolitan as "a citizen of the world"; it is also "our responsibility to exchange ideas about what is right and wrong in the world." We must also realize that we are responsible for other people in the world, and that every person has a different positive contribution that they can make to the "whole." He uses words, such as "shared humanity," to show that while humans may be spread all over the globe and live different lives, there are also many things that we share in common about everyday life. However, problems are caused when people cannot tolerate others or aren't open to diversity. There are also people who believe that in order to work together with another person, that person must "be like them." Overall, as long as we can work against the negatives, Appiah thinks that cosmopolitanism will be a very important factor in any successful community. Globalization has affected each part of our lives, including the way we relate to place. As Tim Cresswell says in his text Places “[i]t seemed that two complimentary changes were occurring at a global scale – the repetition of outlets owned by multinational corporations (homogenization)” which brought with it accessibility to things that it was impossible for some to have access before, and “the flowering of a diverse array of international cultural products” which depicts an internationalization of other cultures, and which consequence is that “these appeared to threaten the notion of unique places…” (54); in some latitudes became so easy to find pieces of other cultures that globalization is seen by some people as a threat to the uniqueness…

It is by giving back to the community that raised us that we truly understand that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. I loved the Ethiopian community I lived in and I was always the first to give back to the community, given the chance. But the community I grew up in wasn’t the best in the slightest. It was filled with sick, homeless people on the streets waiting for death to do them apart. It was a havoc of garbage that resulted from accumulated littering; it is to be said that the people in the community didn’t care at all about the environment they were living in.…

Kwame Appiah talks about, we must wrestle with the idea of diversity and its value. We cannot expect people to be the same, we cannot enforce it upon people either, and it’s completely unethical to do so. Why do we value diversity so much? Do we secretly fear the overly globalized world of the future and the identity crises we will face there? What will our lives be like and will corporations annihilate our individuality once and for all? I don’t think that’s the case. Humans are innovators, creators, and regurgitators but we never spit it back at you the way you gave it to us. That is the secret behind change, especially cultural change. Culture, which is by definition, the shared beliefs system of a people applied to all aspects of shared and personal life within that people, depends on the participation of the individual. One person in any given culture is always the unit of measurement in that culture by which you are able to understand and measure the culture. One person can change and so the culture at large has begun to change or diversify or evolve. What makes us change, what drives…

Appiah poses a question: What do we owe strangers by virtue of our shared humanity? Appiah’s answers this with his personal story, history, literature, and philosophy. Pre-historic hunter-gatherers encountered fewer people in a lifetime than we would on a single day walking down the streets of Delhi, or New Orleans. Centuries ago, people lived in a world where they were isolated, and unable to communicate between different countries. Today we live in a world where most of what we do can affect people in other countries. According to Appiah we are responsible for every other human being. Appiah’s understanding of the responsibilities of a human being is that we should understand, and tolerate other countries, but not all people may actually want to accept other beliefs. We should be able to understand and tolerate other countries beliefs because that is how we are responsible for every other human being. Appiah gives many examples in his writing regarding these two factors.…

In the service of social harmony, politeness often discourages the expression of negative emotions even if they are felt and encourages the expression of positive emotions even if they aren't felt. I completely agree with this statement as I have often observed people responding in this manner. We have been always taught to be nice to others even if they do us bad or say something nasty but I feel that it limits the freedom of speech and also you are not being true to yourself and to the other person. Not telling the person how you truly feel and sugar coating the words does more harm to your relationship that telling the person honestly. It might look like an easy route to not look like a mean or bad person or not to hurt the other person’s feeling but keeping how you truly feels inside you and just saying good things makes you more negative and eventually the true feelings will come out and things will turn really ugly then.…

1.1 Diversity means people are unique; they are different to one another. They have different points of view, see things differently from each other because of the way they have been brought up, depend even on the way they are looking. Their age, culture, social status, sex orientation, abilities, race, politics, and class divide into many categories. Age group divides child, teenager, adult, elderly, babies, they are all different. Every country they have own ideas one things right to one country but it doesn’t mean it is accepted in another country. Social status divides very poor, poor, working class, middle class, rich, millionaire etc. Sex orientation a person might have interest in the same sex or the opposite sex or no interest at all. It’s totally up to individual’s wishes. Some people might be academic, artistic, and practical; creative should not be judged or compared. People have different colour of skin. Some people have strong view point of politics others might have no clue. They go to different ideas. People choose to follow different paths in life. Some people like to get married and have children. Others might like to get married but not have children. Also some people prefer to be single but they might have sexual relationships also while others might choose to be alone or to socialise with friends and family, it is down to people what they decide. All people are good for something, it shouldn’t be looked into general abilities like a ‘must be’ - everyone should be academic or creative for example. Social economic is very different from person to person - some people have no money to afford basic needs others might have too much, in the middle there are different stages people who value money and are careful and sensitive about others might spend their wages in short period of time. Although people environment and other differences makes huge different in seeing things differently. If they look at the same things they will come up with…

The Internet is playing a very important role in the evolution of digital technology, but although it has seen remarkable growth over the last few years, its dispersion remains highly asymmetric. It is widely believed that the so called information age will bring radical change and improvement, and countries all over the world are busy with constructing the necessary infrastructure, the "information superhighways," in order to meet the challenges of the information society of the twenty-first century. Kwame Anthony Appiah’s essay “Making Conversation” tell us about human’s conversation is better expressing themselves in person. Marshall Poe said in his article “The Hive” talks about the evolution of Wikipedia and how people are interacting online. The internet serves a purpose for research, schoolwork, and connections. However, the result from the internet age is loosing communication, lack of social interaction, and the unreliable nature of websites.…

Canada’s multiculturalism, democratic system of government and healthcare system are my top three choices that make me proud to be Canadian. From all the countries in the west, Canada is the only country to rank in the top 20 most diverse and multicultural countries (Morin). Not to mention, Toronto which is a city located in Canada is the most ethnically diverse and multicultural city in the entire planet (Rouse). I am proud to have multiculturalism in Canada since it promotes diversity and demonstrates how people from all cultures can live together in peace and harmony. Multiculturalism is a marvelous way to meet new people and discover various traditions and cultures. Additionally, it brings new foods to savor, interesting cultural activities…

Individuality and nationality are two completely different concepts; although, they are both strongly correlative to each other. Individuality is the quality or character of oneself that distinguishes one from others; whereas, nationality is what one identifies oneself with, whether it be of a society or a culture. Both individuality and nationality play decisive roles; however, one’s individuality is more important because it promotes creativity and stability in one’s life and in society.…

“We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race (Kofi, 1938).” As children we are innocent, playful, and accepting. Then, as we get older we are influenced by our environment; which could be our upbringing, the people around us, and our cultural. According to Rosado, cultural diversity is a system of beliefs and behaviors that includes and respects diverse groups whether in an organization or the world in general. It also acknowledges and values everyone’s socio-cultural differences, and inspires and enables their contribution within the community. It is apparent that we live in a world that is filled with people of all different religion, race, sexual orientation,…

People like Sui Sin Far who consider that individuality is more important believe that having a deep sense of well being is a priority over identifying yourself with others since it gives a person more freedom to be unique. Individuality contributes to the society by offering different perspectives as opposed to nationality binding a group of people to the same beliefs.…
