1. Understand What Is Meant By Counselling Skills
Counselling skills are a set of communication tools, or a competency or accomplishment in communication, acquired or developed. Rather than discuss the 6 classic Rogerian necessary conditions of Person-Centred Counselling, I will focus on some Counselling skills used by people in their day-to-day interactions with others, not specific to just Counsellors.

A teacher using counselling skills wouldn’t usually take professional Counselling qualifications. Counsellors also need liability insurance, and usually have membership of a professional body, e.g. BACP, which others don’t. A major difference is that Person-Centred Counselling is non-directive and usually does not involve giving advice, whereas someone using counselling skills is free to dispense the advice they deem necessary. A key distinction is that Counsellors are generally paid, whereas someone using counselling skills will generally not.
2. Understand The Need To Work Within An Ethical Framework.
Counsellors receive lots of personal, sensitive, confidential information from clients. Clients want safeguards that their Counsellor will be trustworthy, respectful, and competent. To guide members in relation to ethical working, the BACP established “An Ethical Framework For Good Practice In Counselling And Psychotherapy.”

This includes a commitment from the Counsellor to such things as:
Respecting the client’s rights;
Ensuring integrity of the client/Counsellor relationship;

It is not just actions of Counsellors, but also actions Counsellors fail to take that can damage clients. Negligence of Counsellors is measured against what competent Counsellors would do in similar situations. Whilst Liability Insurance gives clients financial restitution, action may be taken against negligent Counsellors under the BACP’s Professional Conduct Procedure, which can ultimately withdraw Counsellors’ BACP membership. This importantly safeguards clients and helps uphold the BACP’s best practice guidelines, and ensures only scrupulous professionals are allowed as
