On January 22, 1973, the united states supreme court ruled that a woman has a constitutional right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy before the fetus acquires viability. Before the decision abortion was illegal in all US, although the majority of states permitted abortion only when necessary to save the life of the pregnant woman; some sixteen states allowed abortions under other circumstances, such as pregnancies resulting from rape and incest.
