Cumulative Final Essay Topic
Due at the Exam, 6 pm, on 6/18/2014 Write a 3-5 page essay in response to the following topic:
Two themes that have arisen in the materials for this class are the idea that the founding of the United States entailed a promise of equality for all citizens, and the view that the citizens of the United States are engaged in a continuous founding. Based on our brief survey of separation of powers, federalism, civil liberties, civil rights and political participation as interpreted through the Constitution of the United States, how well do you think the promise has been met?
How do you expect the Roberts court to impact this process of the continuous founding?
As part of your response, choose a person who did not live during the Founding Era (1764-1789) but who you believe should be included as a Founder of the republic called United States. It may be a Supreme Court Justice, an elected official (like Lincoln), a social or political activist (like Elizabeth Cady Stanton or Frederick Douglass), an artist (like Robert Frost) or any other citizen you would want to include. Introduce that person at the beginning of your essay, and include that person in your assessment.
Be sure to make reference to material from each of three sections of the course listed on the tentative schedule in the syllabus (Constitutional Principles and the Institutions of Government, Civil Liberties, and Equality, Representation and Citizen Participation). Also, be sure that these references include documentation to course readings or other sources.
