I’m going to start by defining CPD continuing professional development CPD is a process of lifelong learning for all individuals and teams which meets the needs of patients and delivers their health outcomes and healthcare priorities of the NHS which enables professionals to expand and fulfil their potential. CPD should meet the needs of both individual and organisation in which they work, it is in a partnership between the individual and the organisation, the main responsibilities for your development lies with you. CPD as part of your professional competence CPD is a range of activities which contribute to your development, one of which is CE Continuing Education this refers to traditional methods of learning such as study days, postgraduate courses e.g. diploma, structured reading. These methods of learning are still likely to feature within your CPD as it is general concept and can be used by everyone in the health and social care industry. The difference between CPD and CE is the continued professional development is something that you will do and learn every day it will be demonstrated in your conduct, time keeping and every day working life. Continuing Education on the other hand is the continuing of training and education carried out by professionals during their current employment it can be time consuming and not always cost effective for an organisation. CPD is beneficial for the organisation as the individual is gaining knowledge recruitment and retention of new and current staff also improving care, helping to meet objectives.
