Craig Boyd Case Summary
Craig Boyd had a very interesting dog fighting case. Boyd and two older ladies posed as animal rescuers to obtain dogs they could use to fight. The old ladies would claim that Boyd was a trainer for Pitbull’s who were aggressive and/or out of control and get the families to transfer ownership (Raeke, 2009). Once Boyd obtained the dogs he would train them and fight the dogs against each other (Raeke, 2009). Boyd was let off easy with almost no penalty until drugs and weapons were involved even though he continued to offend.

Timeline The first discovery made was in Chicago on June 6, 2000 when sanitation workers found three dead dog bodies in trash cans outside of Craig Boyd’s house (ALDF, 2009). This should have been a red flag to alert authorities, but nothing happened. A week later June 13, the same sanitation workers discovered two more dead dogs outside of Boyd’s home (ALDF, 2009). Neighbors complained of an awful smell from dead dogs in Boyd’s hot basement (ALDF, 2009). The Animal Abuse Control Team of Chicago’s police department raided Boyd’s house finding the basement was set up for dogfight training (ALDF, 2009). Six dogs and one puppy were

I feel this case was a stepping stone towards passing the Animal Fighting Prohibition Act in 2007 due to the lack of punishment received for the dog fighting during Boyd’s first offense. The police raided Boyd’s home three separate occasions seizing dogs used for fighting purposes each time and if the third time there wasn’t drugs or weapons, I don’t think they would have done much again. The federal police still have not investigated Boyd’s dog fighting ring violations or the transport of animals across state lines from the two old ladies. The passing of the Animal Fighting Prohibition Act of 2007 is a great thing since offenders of dog fighting would keep offending due to a lack of

Dogfighting is a major problem throughout the world today. Dogfighting is when two dogs, who are specifically bred and trained to fight, are put in a pit to fight each other for people’s enjoyment. Pitbull Legislation

The problem is gang members, drug dealers and dog fighters have been known to train these animals because it often has been claimed that the pit-bull and other “fighting” breeds are especially dangerous because of human breeding selection for physical and “temperamental” traits functional in pit fighting (Budiansky, 2001). . The media spotlights these incidents altering the perception of people whose only exposure to these animals is seeing them in connection with criminals. To these people outlawing so called “dangerous breeds” may sound like a logical solution. However, responsible dog owners are having their homes invaded and being forced to watch a beloved family member being taken away to be “destroyed”. Not because the dog had bitten someone or it was being used in illegal activity, but because it has been labeled dangerous for no other reason than being a pit-bull. Cities, counties and states all across the nation are enacting these pit-bull bans in reaction to highly publicized criminal activity involving these animals. Can you imagine enacting a ban on Pomeranians because a criminal was the owner of one?…

The growing population of domesticated dogs in urban America invades our parks, gyms, and many other public spaces. I have seen dogs live in Manhattan apartments, dress 100% cotton pajamas, and drink pure water that's crystal clear. I also have seen odorous homeless people who cannot afford a good meal. The obvious difference between dogs and humans presents to us in our daily lives. In the article, "No, I Do Not Want to Pet Your Dogs" Farhad Manjoo shows us how dogs and their owners continuously conquer places which arouse my passion on this issue due to the behavior, hygiene and financial problems dogs form.…

First of all, the dogs who are used to fight are mentally and emotionally scarred. For example, during their time spent fighting, they realize that fighting is good; it gives them the love they desire and all they strive for is to please their owners (Larson). The dogs don’t realize that they’re doing something wrong, they just want the attention that all pets crave. In a sense, how they are treated is a mind game because they don’t wish to fight, but they do so to keep their owners happy and they know that if they don’t, they’ll go back to isolation. Furthermore, because of the fact the dogs are deemed mentally unstable, only 40% of the rescued dogs are adoptable, leaving 60% to be euthanized since they’re too aggressive and appear to be beyond rehabilitation (Larson). Although some of the dogs have a chance of getting adopted, it can take years of rehabilitation to do get them in the necessary conditions for adoption (Greenwood). In addition, as a result of dog fighting, there is an estimation of tens of thousands of dogs who die yearly (Greenwood). This is a large amount of lives that could be saved by stopping this cruel source of entertainment. Oftenly at sites, ashes that consist of dog remains can be found, whether the dogs were killed while fighting or by their owner (Greenwood). This is very inhumane, especially considering the fact that dogs are such loving animals; never harming animals or people deliberately…
