Creation Myth-India
In the Indian creation myth it is believed that world is created, destroyed, re-created in eternally repetitive series of cycles. It moves from one Maha Yuga to the next, and each Maha Yuga contains four yugas each worse than the last one.
The creator of the earth is only one god but it goes through many phases. Vishnu is his name and he is Brahma first as the creator of the world. Then he is Vishnu, preserver of life on earth. Finally he is Shiva-Rudra, the destroyer of life on earth. It does not have a gender. In each yuga Vishnu is the god but his name changes.
The first yuga is Krita Yuga where everything is good and bright and perfect. The presiding god is Brahma and dharma (ideal, righteous behavior or moral duty) walks on all of its four foot. Sorrow does not exist. The second age is Treta Yuga. Dhrma now walks on three of his four legs. Virtue and moral perfection has been declined. Vishnu is presiding god. People are devoted to knowledge which they consider the highest virtue. The third age is Dvapara Yuga. Dharma walks only on two legs. Vishnu is still the god. Disease, misfortune, and death are part of everyone’s existence. The fourth age is Kali Yuga. Only the poor are honest …show more content…
and the only remaining virtue is charity.
At the end of 1,000 Maha Yugas the god Vishnu adopts the form of Shiva-Rudra and destroys all life on Earth.
It enters the sun’s rays and intensifies them for 100 years, evaporating all water. All three worlds burn up from this intense heat. There will be no living creature left after 100 years. Then it will exhale dreadful storm clouds. For 100 years it will rain. Beside the sea only Vishnu will continue to exist. Just as the great flow buries everything down a large golden egg will appear. This egg will contain the seeds of all forms of life on earth before the flood. Ass the world drowns the egg will safely flood over the ocean. After that Vishnu will sleep for 1,000 Maha Yugas and the world will sleep with
it.
After his sleep Vishnu will awaken with a marvelous lotus flower emerging from his navel. And Vishnu will emerge form the lotus flower as Brahma. The lotus will become the foundation of the three worlds. Seeing all life is destroyed on earth Brahma will break open the egg. The image of all three worlds exists within Brahma. First it will bring forth water, fire, air wind, sky, and earth. Then he will create the forms of time. Then Brahma will create gods, demons, and human beings. The demons will come out of his buttocks. He will then cast of his body creating darkness. Taking a second body he will bring forth gods from his face, and cast of the second body to create light. From following bodies Brahma will bring forth humans and other animals.
