“Myths which are believed in tend to become true.” In the greek myths “Echo and Narcissus,” “Demeter and Persephone,” and “Arachne,” they all have creations. The creations in all these myths are believable, in my opionion. In the myth “Echo and Narcissus,” an echo and a flower were created. In the myth “Demeter and Persephone,” the seasons were created. In the myth “Arachne,” a spider was created.
First, a flower and echo is created in “Echo and Narcissus.” In the myth, there is a girl who can only repeat what she is last told. She falls in love with a handsome man named Narcissus, but then kills herself in a cave because she can’t tell him that she loves him, thus creating an echo. Narcissus also dies in the myth from staring at his own reflection in a pond. He dies of starvation and is turned into a narcissus flower. This creation is pretty believable because when Echo died in a cave her voice would still linger like a real echo. “In despair, she killed herself in a nearby cave, but her voice lingers to this day, repeating the last word it hears” (2)
Second, the seasons are created in “Demeter and Persephone.” In the myth, Demeter’s daughter, Persephone, is taken to the underworld by Hades. This made Demeter sad, so wherever she went, the earth would turn cold and dry. “Before, the land Demeter walked would burst into flowers and plants; now, her footsteps turned the earth cold, dry, and lifeless” (2). Later on, Hermes goes to the underworld to get back Persephone. Hades lets her go, but before she leaves, he feeds Persephone a promagrante and she eats three seeds. That means that she would have to go and stay in the underworld for three months each year. Those three months are winter. When it’s fall, Demeter is sad because her daughter is leaving soon. When it’s spring, flowers bloom because Demeter is happy that Persephone is coming back soon. When it’s summer, everything grows because Demeter and Persephone are happy
