harp so much on how great and true their theory is that they are not only “deaf but they are “blind” in a sense.
One very famous document that was written by men who were not “deaf” or “blind” to other ways of thought was The Declaration of Independence (Geisler and Turek). The Declaration of Independence is a nonfictional document that includes a creation theory. The writers of The Declaration of Independence were not “blind” or “deaf” because they were the ones who established the free world, something that had never been done before. The Declaration of Independence is a nonfictional document, but there are many fictional documents written by people who are not “deaf” or “blind” that speak of Creation Theories. The fictional book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is about a wretched man named Arthur whose house was being torn down by the government, to make room for a highway; on the day that his house was scheduled to be destroyed, Arthur’s best friend, Ford, came to
save him. Ford was not worried about saving Arthur from his home being destroyed, but saving him from the coming destruction of Earth. Ford sat Arthur down and explained to him that he, Ford, is actually an alien from a distant corner of the universe, called Betlelgeuse. Ford told about how he was making a pit stop on Earth during his intergalactic journey and he, due to miscalculations, got stuck on Earth. Ford cared about Arthur, and did not want to see him disappear just as Earth was about to. So Ford took Arthur on an amazing journey through the galaxy. The whole time they were hitchhiking from alien ship to alien ship. Midway through the story, Arthur encountered the Jatravarid community. He soon learned that Jatravartidians believe all life was sneezed out of the nostrils of their idol, The Great Green Arkleseizure. At the end of the story Arthur was separated from Ford and their friends they picked up along the way and ended up in a weird factory of sorts. While in this strange place (as if the other places he had already been to were not strange enough) Arthur met a man who took him on a ride through this factory. On this ride, Arthur learned how the earth was created. This factory he was going through was the factory that all the planets are made, the company that ran this factory was responsible for the creation of every planet, universe, and galaxy in this book (Adams). This is a creation theory called Intelligent Design (Evolution vs. Intelligent Design). Intelligent Design is “the theory that matter, the various forms of life, and the world were created by a designing intelligence (Intelligent Design).” Intelligent Design’s slogan is “Teaching the controversy.” It is proposing that life was created, but not necessarily by a god (Evolution vs. Intelligent Design). The question that is now proposed is “If earth was created, but not by a god, who created it?” Well, different options to answer that question with are other humans (not human beings that are on the same intelligence level of those on Earth, but a much more intelligent human being that is in control over the humans on Earth, these higher beings make themselves unknown to their lesser), higher primates, or even extraterrestrials (Scott). The Declaration of Independence says “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Even in the United States of America’s Declaration of Independence states that humans have a creator (Geisler and Turek). The Declaration of Independence was written upon Christian Morals (Is Christianity). The Christian Bible has its own account of creation; this theory of creation is generally called “Creation.” According to Creation, God created everything. “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ … And God said, ‘Let the land produce vegetation,’ … And God said, ‘Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth,’ … And God said, ‘Let the land produce living creatures,’ … Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image,’ …” The Bible also tells that God not only created humans, but gave them a meaning for life higher than themselves (Holy Bible). One fact that supports Intelligent Design and Creation is the concept of Divine Design. Divine Design states that every design has a designer, so if the universe is a highly complex design then the universe must have a highly complex designer. An example of Divine Design is the Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore (Geisler and Turek). The Grand Canyon, though an extremely beautiful landmark, naturally happened. The Grand Canyon had no designer, and so is a very simple design (NCHGC). While Mount Rushmore is a very complex design, about four hundred people worked to complete it over a course of fourteen years. Mount Rushmore is an extremely complex design, so therefore it must have had a very complex designer (Mount Rushmore). Divine Design is just one example that helps to support Creation and Intelligent Design. Now here comes the biggest and most obvious question that can boggle the mind of a Creationist. Who or what created this divine, awesome, brilliant, and complex creator? This question is simply answered with “I’m not sure, but I have faith that this is what happened.” Now, obviously a Christian is going to have faith that God created the world, but those who are on the strict Intelligent Design of the Creation Spectrum just have to have faith in whatever they thing the creator of life is (CFPA). What about the whole “people came from monkeys” deal? No, humans did not come from monkeys in any logical Creation Theory. According the Evolution, all life shared one common ancestor; therefore humans are related to monkeys but humans did not evolve from monkeys (Scott). Charles Darwin is the scientist accredited with the Theory of Evolution. After thirteen years of work Darwin was the first to publish a work about evolution, entitled On the Origin of Species, in 1859 (BBC) (Evolution and Creation). One idea that Darwin published is the idea of Natural Selection. Natural Selection is considered by almost all modern evolutionary biologists to be the most powerful force of evolutionary change. “The principle is simple: generate a variety of possible solutions, and then pick the one that works best for the problem a hand.” Natural Selection can simply be known as “survival of the fittest.” There are three requirements for Natural Selection: variation, environmental condition, differential reproduction. All this summed up, Natural Selection causes Evolution because eventually a species can completely change to successfully survive in its environment (Scott). Before Darwin could describe how Natural Selection occurs he had to figure out where the life came from that Natural Selection will occur on. This is where Evolution theories come in. One large and popular Evolution Theory is the Big Bang. The Big Bang Theory proposed that the universe was created in a violent event or eruption that happened about thirteen billion seven million years ago, also the universe began no larger than a proton and in a millisecond it expanded to the size of a basketball (Big Bang Theory). Now, it’s time do some math now. If a basketball is 24 centimeters in diameter and the Earth is 127,420,000 centimeters in diameter, that means the Earth is 5309166.6667 times bigger than a basketball. Next, if it took one millisecond for earth to get to the size of a basketball, and Earth is 539166.6667 times larger than that basketball then it took 5309.1667 seconds, or 88 minutes, or one hour and 48 minutes for Earth to become the size it is now, according the Big Bang Theory (What is the). Another Evolution Theory is the Steady-State Theory. The Steady-State Theory states that the universe has always existed and had no singular point of creation, also that the universe is as big as it will ever be and will not ever grow. This theory was popular in the 1950’s and 60’s, and was inspired by the 1940’s film entitled Dead of the Night (Steady-State Theory). Edwin Hubble was the scientist to turn other scientists away from this theory. Hubble discovered that the universe is ever expanding and has never at one point not been expanding (Big Bang Theory). With every almost every social battle, comes a legal battle. Creation Theories is no exception to this statement. In 1925 the Scopes Trial, nicknamed the Monkey Trial, basically stated that teachers were not allowed to teach evolution in public schools. A writer said the Scopes Trial is “a landmark in the battle to teach evolution in American Public schools (Evolution and Creation in American Public Schools).” A more recent court case regarding Creation Theories is the Edwards vs. Aguillard trial. This trial resulted in making schools allow equal time to teach evolution and creation. This trial also brought up the First Amendment and sparked new controversy in the freedom of speech (Scott). The First Amendment says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The First Amendment gives no power to a government agency, such as a public school system, to prohibit the freedom of speech of a teacher when it comes to teaching evolution or creation in public schools (Meiklejohn). The battle of Evolution vs. Creation in Public Schools has not ceased nor will it come to a close soon. Currently in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin is evolution specifically regarded as a theory (Boyle). Looking back on all these theories and thinking about all the different ones not even mentioned, because there are just so many, makes a person start to think about what theory they support. Do they agree with Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and support Intelligent Design, where other life forms made us? Do they support The Bible’s Account of Creation where we were made for a purpose by God? Or do they support the Evolutionaries and maybe believe that a huge eruption happened? “Whatever god you believe in, we all come from the same One.” A quote by a famous musician and human rights supporter, Macklemore (Macklemore). In this quote Macklemore says that humans are all created by the same force, no matter what he or she believes. The fact of the matter is that humans are all created with a purpose in mind and with good intentions. Just like we saw in the end of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, it does not matter what a person believes all that matters is that he or she treats his fellow humans right, because all humans deserve to be treated equally.
