Creative Writing: Barbed Wind
Barbed wire fingers were strew across the barren land and the familiar smell of death lingered, its stale grip grasped the throats of those brave enough to bear it. The mud became unbearable, it oozed in to every crack and crevice, swallowing anything that
Stood in its direction, it lived and breathed pain and fear. What once where whispering winds became a constant howling cry that slashed and thrashed about.a rumbling pack of clouds had come rolling from the east smothering the morning ambiance of the royal sky and its cracks that filled with amber

Death was forecasted as we propelled through the storm that awakened at our wrongdoings. “The bows went plunging at the breeze, sails cracked and lashed out strips in the big wind.” (p. 1048) Even the simple thought of one surviving through the maelstrom was inconceivable. Nine days we “drifted on the teeming sea before dangerous high winds.” (p. 1048) On the tenth day, we “came to the coastline”.…

Tormented. Beaten. Herded like cattle. Imprisoned within walls lined with barbed wire. Cowering with fear when in the shadow of a tall, strong soldier. All hope depicting escape has faded away and been replaced with dread. No one would dare attempt to abscond from the camp for it would result in immediate death. Blood spilled on the dirt floors, living in filth and scars.…

I glanced out of the train window, watching the scenery speed away. Mighty oaks, bristling firs and radiant maple trees were all transformed into no more than colourful pins. The seat beside me lay vacant, as what once sat a wonderful and lovely gentleman, no longer shares with me the long trip home. I stare at the endless mass of space, overshadowing the Earth. The grey radiant clouds, together, began to form a distinctive image of his face, shaping his luminous smile almost to an exact. The subconscious image the clouds attempted to portray, vanished in a matter or seconds, as the white, thick clouds, spread its wings in what was forecasted to be a destructive path. Witnessing this brings me back to the day God wept a silent rain among the mournful souls.…

Wooden beams fell in the streets, kicking up dust, blinding the pathway even more. Brick houses crumbled as their foundations burned away. And in the midst of everything else the battle continued raging, commoners, artisans, and soldiers alike, falling to the onslaught of the red men as they made their advancement through the night. Past the crackling of the fires, Colbren could still hear the sharp pangs of steel against steel, echoing through the night, imprinting the sharp noise in his ears. He could hear the wretched sounds of choking men gasping for breath, coughing up blood as they were gutted by the demonic metal of the invading savages. And Colbren knew that among all this, his father was lost somewhere in the melee.…

I awoke in the early hours of the morning as usual. The air was thick and wet, but the day’s hunt wouldn’t wait. I got up and stretched my legs before checking the traps I set the evening before. The forest seemed unsettlingly too quiet. Did I wake up earlier than I usually would have? I walked down to the waterhole, to see if any of my nets were filled. There was a soft mist over the shallows, creating an ominous feel. I checked up and down the banks, but my nets had all vanished. With the sounding of the raven’s caw, I decided to head back up to camp. I heard a quick rattle in the leaves due east of my position, so I made haste to draw my bow and hold her steady in firing position. My breath was heavy as the musk in the air poured into my lungs.…

She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In an enormous kingdom by the sea, a kingdom filled with blooming flowers, filled with green pasture and chilling fountains, a maiden by the name of Annabel Lee sat silently. The waves lapped gently, for nothing could disturb her peaceful stature. The sky was a dark blue colour, so dark that the sea and the sky seemed to merge together. Her beautiful, blonde hair flapped in the wind, hair so light that even the gentlest breeze could lift. A tender smile etched on her face, she stared at the horizon, the sunlight reflecting her golden features. Birds crowed as if they were signifying another bright, wonderful day. Even the creatures that existed on the land seemed to marvel in her glorious presence.…

It was a grey afternoon with a dull sky. The wind was sighing in the tree top and boughs moaned. The dark, ragged and ominous clouds drifted over. Surprisingly, instead of beating down a curtain of rain from heavens, it only brought drizzle. “I wish it would rain cats and dogs.” Sylvia talked to herself while she was sitting in a bus looking up to the eerie sky.…

The wind howled through the woods. The trees violently swayed, threatening to topple with ever shudder. The rain tore through the night, drenching everything in it's path. The dark grey sky crackled with energy, illuminating the whole forest for a fraction of a second. An almighty BOOM sounded throughout the forest, and all surrounding areas. A single spear of lightening darted down to the forest floor gone before a second glance. The sky rumbled; a dark ominous sound.…

He stepped out into the cold, dark night. The air smelled fresh after the storm. He gasped as the cold air sliced through his throat, his breath dissipating from a cloud of steam. He wrapped himself more tightly into his black cape, and ventured forward into the night. The sounds of his feet crushing the pebbles underneath, the ravens spilling out their haunting call, his own breath quivering in the icy atmosphere - these noises chilled him even further. Shook his spine and froze his heart. He stopped suddenly. As if he could take no more, as if the world's conspiracy against him on this dark night had taken its final toll on his vulnerable soul. A distant sheet of lightning cracked through the sky, briefly lighting a tortured, hallowed face floating directly in front of him, mirroring his own. He leapt back in fright and nearly lost his balance, but his cold, slowed brain caught him on the edge of the abyss.…
