Creative Writing: My Hero's Break
Nothing seemed to scare him more then the quiet before the storm. It wasn't a familiar feeling for Keith, fear. Often he didn't even spare a moment to worry about circumstances before rushing into dangerous missions head first. Usually he had Lance in his ear, edging him on, filling his head in that calm and confident manner, his voice filling the silence of space. Now, Keith was left to listen to the void, his nerves prickling at his skin underneath his armor. Screw the silence, he thinks, screw Lance and his stupid hero complex, screw the universe for putting him here.
He knows he’s tense, stiff as he waits around the corner of where he truly wants to be; but he can’t seem to will himself to relax. The sound of passing footsteps echo along

It had been too easy to sneak aboard the galra ship, too easy to connect to Lance and Blues energy through Red, even easier to slink down the halls and pathways to this point. He’s not entirely sure what he’ll find when he opens that prison door, he just hopes he’s not too late. Shiro had been missing for an entire year, Lance had been missing for two months. Then again, the galra hadn’t known they had a paladin of Voltron when they had captured Shiro. His count reaches thirty and the galra turn down another hallway, Keith is quick on his feet and rushes to the metal door separating him from Lance. With the touch of a palm the door slides open, the room before him is covered in black shadows that morph as the light from the hallway creeps in. There in the corner, a hunched figure sits against the wall, its body pulled in close, seeming to shrink as the light reaches towards …show more content…
The small movement reveals so much. Matt isn’t in good shape, he wobbles and leans into Keith’s shoulder, and he’s sure he can see an unkindly shape jutting from Matts ankle; he prays it’s just the shadows. With a quick glance into the hallway to check for the all clear, Keith carries Matt out into the open. They manage an awkward shuffle as they go, their speed leaving something to be desired, but he keeps it to himself. He knows Matt isn't to blame, he also knows by the look on Matt’s face that even now he’s pushing himself. Keith feels his throat constrict, a growl whispers through him, red voicing his anger in a way Keith

Stacey couldn’t have cared less about the near miss with the guy in the car because he was in a hurry trying to get to Nadley Pond before Ranger Arlen went home for the day. He was camping alone that Memorial Day weekend of 1988 and he needed to connect and talk to somebody familiar. It was weird, but over the last three years, Arlen made him feel that he could come to the place he still felt connected to his friend Arlene, and talk to Arlen as if he was talking to her at the same time. He would never tell anybody that, certainly not Arlen, because it sounded irrational to think it, let alone say it out loud. He craved something crazy, and to top it all off, he had to camp at Wharton Pond because he didn’t have the camper anymore to satisfy…

About noon, on the fifth day of their journey, Charity told Uriah to stop the wagon. Looking around, Uriah did not see anything in particular that caught his attention and did not know why she wanted him to stop; as far as he could tell, there was not anything they needed there. And, his mother had not gotten off the wagon to go do her business or said anything about eating lunch. So, after bringing the horses and wagon to a complete halt, he turned to Charity and asked, “Why did you want me to stop?”…

There is a substantial repetition of the phrase “it was Keith who…..” This phrase portrays to us that in the adult Stephen’s memory, it is Keith who initiates everything, all the ideas and missions. For example, Keith takes the lead when they search for clues in Mrs Hayward’s desk. There are also threats of violence from Keith, shown by the incident of swearing an oath using the “bayonet”. There is also a repeated comparison between Keith and his father: “He looks like his father”. This creates a sinister quality to Keith’s power over Stephen that the young Stephen is partially aware of. Keith tends to almost use biblical language, “he uttered the words and the words became so”. This demonstrates Keith’s cogent power. Stephen’s inherent fear is shown through the fact that he twice fails to correct Keith’s spelling of the words “private” and “secret”. His morale is noticeably low, and Keith is able to capitalize on that…

The detailed description of each and every one of these plans shows Stephen’s intrigue of the plans, and show how he was led so easily by his friend telling him tales. This passage is followed by what can be seen as a sarcastic comment by adult Stephen or a vision of hope and glory by child Stephen; “… and our messages would pass …”. Adult’s perception of Keith seems to be revolved around negative emotions, mainly stupidity and annoyance, whereas child Stephen shows how much he loves spending time with Keith rather openly. I think this is an important factor to note at the beginning of the novel as it is interesting to know how their relationship change and blossoms, and also how Stephen’s perception changes as his character and personality…

There was a rap at the apartments entrance that made Dave jump. He rolled his eyes behind his dim shades and reminded himself of how much he hated visitors, especially when it was 11:40 in the evening. With a groan, Strider stood and trudged toward the doorway, twisted the handle, and yanked the door open. The last person he expected this sudden, spontaneous visitor to be, looked at him and quickly brought him into an embrace. Said hug was rather tight, which caused Dave to inhale deeply in fear he'd suffocate otherwise. "Yo, dude." He greeted nonchalantly and planned to oppress his joy for a while. If he expressed what he felt at that moment in time, he would have immediately started bawling and hugging back tightly; but he had to act as if he were upset with the other, or at least not as ecstatic that he was home. He was, after all the reason Dave had to take care of himself--why he was alone and worried all the time.…
