Creative Writing: Riverdale Country School
The reason Wes 1's mom didn't want him to go to public school was because she was afraid.
Riverdale Country School with its rolling hills and luxurious land was in the Bronx and had the grand appearance of a university that sat along the banks of the Hudson River. The buildings were also ivy covered and the whole placed seemed like something you might find in a storybook. Wes 1 felt uncomfortable attending Riverdale because he knew that his neighborhood friends would look down on him. He knew the name of the school wasn't going to impress any of them but rather they would become suspicious of him. Wes 1 knew that some of your reputation came from your school.

    Throughout his entire time at Valley Forge, things were given to Wes to allow him to pick his pathway. This came to him through role models such as Captain Hill and Colonel Murphy, both of which gave him life lessons and inspiration. Even though Wes had a very strong hatred for the school at first, he grew to see how it would positively affect him. This was through his realization of what his family was doing for him, and what the people inspiring him were doing for him. Author Wes stated that Captain Hill had cared about his succession and wanted to help Wes come to value Valley Forge and what was offered. “They made it clear that they cared if I succeeded, and eventually so did I,” stated the author [115]. Looking at this evidence and using what we know from the book, we can directly see the impact of the people coming from Valley Forge had on Wes. As he learned people wanted him to succeed, he taught himself to value and care about the potential he has and the future he could have. The text portrays the idea that Valley Forge, as an extrinsic factor, is impacting Wes and his perception of his future.     I enjoyed this book by Bell Hooks far more than I did Creative Schools by Ken Robinson. I thought this author had a better ability to lay out her thoughts and explain to the reader more efficiently her ideas. The chapters were fifty percent shorter as well, which helped the reading feel less drawn out and lengthy. The author did a better job providing examples from her life that related to the subject than Robinson did, although they were also rather lengthy. Creative Schools tended to have the examples seem more like tangents rather than supporting a point unlike this book so far. Although the Hooks’ experiences were valid, at some parts the story felt a little overwhelming with the larger vocabulary usage and the overuse of the word “pedagogy.”…

    With Tony's mentorship to Wes, he is not taught to settle his disagreements peacefully. "'Rule number one: If someone disrespects you, you send a message so fierce that they won't have the chance to do it again'" (33). Because of the influence of his older brother, Wes grows up thinking that what's wrong, reacting violently to a situation, is considered right. At eight years old, Wes has been taught to fight back. When Wes sees his brother and the other boys in his neighborhood fighting each other, he assumes that that's the best way to react to a situation. Values like these are instilled at a young age, they carry through Wes's lifetime. In His teenage years, Wes continues to mimic these values in his teenage years. "As he left his room, he shoved a clip into the gun and cocked the slide hammer back, fully loading the weapon... Wes could only see red. He was blind with rage. Instincts kicked in. Tony's words rang through his mind. Send a message." (page 104). In this situation, Wes uses Tony's advice to justify killing another young man. Wes has no control over the lessons taught to him by his role models, and can't control the way he is influenced. Because Wes is taught such a violent message that's reinforced by others around him, he follows the same violent path without even thinking.
