Creative Writing: The Hunter
As the breeze floated through the canopy, the forest’s quiet was broken by rustling branches and frantic leaves. When the wind died so did the sound, and the forest returned to it’s ghostly silence. For a wooded place, usually full of life thrumming together as one both day and night, this silence was abnormal. It was foreboding, and even in the light of day the woods were cold and dark, as if the sun’s rays could not pierce the leafy canvas as it had in the past. The air was heavy and threatening, with no animals in sight. It was as if there had been an exodus of all creatures, from smallest insect to largest beast, and none had remained. Wandering through a thicket, the hunter felt unnerved as every primal instinct urged him to run. He was a seasoned visitor to this forest, explorer of it’s secrets for decades, but today it was a different, silent world. It was as if a long-time friend had become a total stranger. The hunter stepped on a stray tree branch, his first misstep in almost half a century. The sound …show more content…
The hunter cowered behind a large oak, stricken with fear by this otherworldly noise. It was unnatural, from no creature of this earth be they man or beast. Though it faintly sounded human, it echoed with haunting notes, as if it’s owner was facing and enduring the worst forms of torture. The man held his head and clenched his teeth as he fought through the noise, but it pierced his skull and stabbed his brain. The howl seemed to go on for hours, far longer than any natural creature. When it finally stopped, the hunter staggered to his feet. Stumbling forward, he fell into a large patch of vines and ivy, becoming quickly ensnared in the foliage. Pulling his long knife from its sheath, he started hacking at the entangling vegetation before he saw something in the distance moving towards him. He froze in his been trap, hiding his knife behind his left

“One day Mama and some ladies went for an outing into the dense pine forest…this was the first time in my life that I had been taken out into the open where I could see dense forest…I could barely catch my breath for joy, and we no sooner came into the forest than I, out of my mind with rapture, immediately ran off and kept running…I ran, frisked, picked flowers, and climbed to the tips of tall trees” (6).…

Upon arriving at the state park, the beautiful trees of autumn welcome you along with the variety of faces unfamiliar to you, walking around care-free. The trunks of the trees were all sorts of sizes with multitude colors; the trees were particularly brown, like milk chocolate. While some trees were bare, others possessed a thick collection of leaves, fanning out like the mane of a lion. The collection of people walking among the fallen autumn leaves creates an everlasting sound—swish, swish, swish. The faint sound of the lake brushing against the sand murmurs in the distance, inviting you to…

About noon, on the fifth day of their journey, Charity told Uriah to stop the wagon. Looking around, Uriah did not see anything in particular that caught his attention and did not know why she wanted him to stop; as far as he could tell, there was not anything they needed there. And, his mother had not gotten off the wagon to go do her business or said anything about eating lunch. So, after bringing the horses and wagon to a complete halt, he turned to Charity and asked, “Why did you want me to stop?”…

Hours passed in the tree stand and the forest had stayed silent. From far away, Will’s first sign of elk came. Bull elk use a loud call, a bugle, to ward off other bull elk and this is what Will heard. Across the canyon at least five bulls were bugling at each other, at this sound Will’s anticipation heightened because this meant the elk were moving. Goose bumps accompanied the chill he felt down his neck. Sitting up straight in his tree stand, Will notched and arrow into his…

I awoke in the early hours of the morning as usual. The air was thick and wet, but the day’s hunt wouldn’t wait. I got up and stretched my legs before checking the traps I set the evening before. The forest seemed unsettlingly too quiet. Did I wake up earlier than I usually would have? I walked down to the waterhole, to see if any of my nets were filled. There was a soft mist over the shallows, creating an ominous feel. I checked up and down the banks, but my nets had all vanished. With the sounding of the raven’s caw, I decided to head back up to camp. I heard a quick rattle in the leaves due east of my position, so I made haste to draw my bow and hold her steady in firing position. My breath was heavy as the musk in the air poured into my lungs.…

The air brisk, leaves swaying in the calm wind. The sound of rustling leaves soothed the moment accompanied by birds overhead. But the overcast day was soon disrupted by a distant snap of a twig. It was followed by thuds of a foot connecting to the mossy forest floor. Then a figure of a man popped between the dense forest. “Run!” he said between every pant, “Run hurry!” A small group of 5 gathered their gear swiftly and proceeded to do as he says. Run.…

In this reflective narrative piece, Wilson Hall depicted a life changing hunt. This piece kept me on my toes throughout the entire piece because of the way he builds up and uses suspense to keep you engaged. Hall uses vivid language and imagery to really capture the essence and intensity of his time in the woods. While reading “the cool fall breeze hit my face”, the woods and scenery came alive. This type of language is used all throughout the paper by sequencing the events in chronological order.…

Birds squawked and frenzied, the peace of the forest disrupted by the loud firing of a hunting rifle, the harsh sound slicing through the air. The doe fell to the ground with a thud, unsettling the leaves around it. He lowered his hunting rifle, and squinted at the still body. He sprinted over to the corpse, eyeing the motionless animal, taking pride in his precise shot.…

“A good hunter can make use of any material given to hunt. If not, you’ll be sleeping with the dogs tonight.” murmured Zaroff. Zaroff fired a shot to the ceiling over were rainsford was crouching. “Next time you hear a gunshot, there will be a bullet between your eyes.” He said. Zaroff was very calm compared to Rainsford. Rainsford surveyed the room. He saw chains hanging on the wall. The room was relatively large compared to Rainsfords room. There were paintings of unknown animals that Zaroff had killed, along with stuffed animal heads, hanging from the wall. Rainsford scurried across the room to the chains, hiding behind an extrusion in the wall as a bullet whizzed by his head.…

As a child, I was raised my whole life in the country side. My mother and I had lived for years in a lonely shack at the edge of the small village we called home. At the very edge of the village was an eerie forest, a forest that seemed to beckon unwary fools into entering it. I was always told as a child to never go near the forest, especially at night. Some people say that a bear lives there, while others say that a serial killer lives there, and some even say that a monster lives there, either way the forest is always portrayed with death. I remember various occasions in which I would wake up for reasons unknown, only to find myself outside in my backyard staring at the edge of the forest, the soft moonlight caressing my bare skin, the crisp night air followed by the refreshing scent of grass. On one occasion I thought I heard a…
