Mekapenamas: A Short Story
The air brisk, leaves swaying in the calm wind. The sound of rustling leaves soothed the moment accompanied by birds overhead. But the overcast day was soon disrupted by a distant snap of a twig. It was followed by thuds of a foot connecting to the mossy forest floor. Then a figure of a man popped between the dense forest. “Run!” he said between every pant, “Run hurry!” A small group of 5 gathered their gear swiftly and proceeded to do as he says. Run. “Why are we running!” exclaimed a hunter.
The man trying to gather his breath said, “Mekas, a bunch of them!” Synced, they turn their heads to be brief to introduce a face painted tribe called the Mekapenamas. The terrain became rough and coarse. That's when Adam decided to trip Johnny. The two had had a history of tension. Richard saw the action, but knowing Adam had power and age over him he kept shut. “Johnny!” Shouted Richard, the man originally running.
“I got him, ” said Harrison frantically. They glanced at the tribe whose bows were primed. A line of scrawny, dark skinned bodies lined up with the intent to kill. The leader,

Then all of a sudden a member of the tribe signaled to back down. They turned their heads the direction member was looking at trying to find a hope to live. Down the stretch of a forest were brown-coated men lined up with a M1819 Hall rifle aiming right above our foreheads. “Shoot us, ” said the tribe leader “ I Dare you to, ” The leader was smart enough to know that the accuracy of the gun was lacking. And if they were to shoot both the tribe and the hunters were in harm's way. The hunters were dead silent in shock and partly in fear. Even when the killer wants to kidnap Mark from his home, it compares itself to a greater force. “The killer [knows] that the kidnapping of Mark Jones [is] the…first dance of a powerful ceremony that [will] change the world…The world [will] shudder when a white boy [is] sacrificed. A small, helpless boy. The killer, like a Christian plague, [has swept] into the Jones’s house and stolen the first-born son of a white family” (192). Similar to the plague that claimed the lives of all of the first-born sons of the Egyptians and unrighteous Jews, the killer is sent by some higher power and it understands that. Before it goes to kidnap Mark Jones, “[t]he killer [kneels] down beside the bed as if to pray. Then the killer [does] pray” (153). The killer would not pray unless it believes that what it is doing is good. Unlike all of the other violent characters in the book, the Indian Killer is fighting for a more righteous…

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…
